Today my beau and I spent a couple of hours over at the park on the river near to where I live. It was very relaxing by the river and watching the birds and their offspring enjoying the inner park lake.

Dee, Oh...those Canadian geese. they can be very annoying. Sometimes I have anywhere from 25 - 50 geese on my property at one time. But they are nice when they stay by the ponds.

You're not kidding, Rick. And trying to navigate the minefield of their turds all over the place is a real challenge. On behalf of my country, I apologize for the Canada Geese invasion on your property!

:p

Thanks for posting the images. I'm learning the tools of this forum.

How do geese cross the road?
Answer: In any manner they desire.

Welcome to the geese at a neighborhood lake, though some might think the word "lake" laughable. One of them here decided to stop in middle of the road for dinner in the form of a discarded sandwich. The others joined in, or appeared indecisive. I had to drive onto the grass to get around them. Some of them will stare a car down, I'm telling you.

Minnesota is in the middle of an epidemic of turkeys, which appear to be quite content to scrounge from suburban bird feeders and dumpsters, and are absolutely unafraid of anything. They seem likely to become the next "pest bird" in the state.

It's truly weird, because when I was a kid, there literally were no turkeys in Minnesota (though the state was listed as being within their "range") and geese were few and far between, seen on occasion as they were heading south in formation. Now....they're everywhere.

A lake in the next town over has several hundred Canada geese year-round. Earlier this year, the town put out a call for volunteers to help clean up the area around the lake, which is a magnet for litter. On the duly-appointed day, the brave volunteers set out with their trash bags, but after a couple hours of goose poop slip and slide, the whole thing was called off.

Where I work there are some Egyptian goose. Yes, in the Netherlands  Anyway, they are beautiful, but very aggressive towards other birds.

Melody,

Melody, In the name of good international relations with our closest neighbours I will also apologize for the invading Canada Geese audaciously dining in the middle of your roadways. That is just SO rude!

Personally, I figure, since animals have so little natural habitats left, the least a person can do is stop to let them cross the road, or dine on it. Some creatures give a person pause and awe at their survival in our company, and demand respect for it. Did you ever notice how audacious types stick together?

There are a few young geese families around, mallards, and a couple of swans . . . often resting, and nap times seem to follow a schedule.

My kids came home from Camp yesterday and said they had learned a new version of Duck, Duck, Goose. Set up is the same, but instead of tapping the participants on the head, the player holds a small cup of water and plays, Drip, Drip, Drop. You got it! Wish I coulda seen that!
