I decided to go and see Janis again last night, on the penultimate date of her UK tour.

The venue was the wonderful "Stables" concert theatre at Wavendon, in the grounds of the home of Johnny Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine.

The weather was still glorious even at 8pm, and Janis later remarked how good it had been throughout this UK tour ... the best she could remember in over 30 years of coming here!

Janis had fixed me up with a fine seat in the stage-left block, on the aisle down which she made her entrances and exits ...

The house was just about full, and the show was wonderful.

Here's the set list:

From Me To You
When I Lay Down
Crocodile Song
Danger Danger
Light A Light
Love is Blind
Society’s Child
Fly Too High (with flashing lights, and guitar break with bits from Take No Prisoners)
Old English Folk Song
I Hear You Sing Again

Break ...

Tea And Sympathy
All Those Promises
Here Comes The Night
My Autobiography
At Seventeen
Between The Lines
Joy

Standing ovation, leading to her re-entrance and ...

Encore: Jesse

And as Janis was leaving the stage for the last time, amidst sustained applause, en route up the aisle she detoured to her left, came straight up to me, and gave me a big public hug!! What a treat!

And just listen to this: when Janis briefly described The Pearl Foundation, in her introduction to "I Hear You Sing Again", she revealed that The Stables, which is itself a charitable foundation established by Cleo and Johnny, had announced that they would be donating their own percentage of the merchandise to The Pearl Foundation! Big applause ensued. Janis was clearly very moved by this fine gesture ... to the point where she actually chose to mention it again in her closing words.

Isn't that great?

After the show, as always, she chatted with everybody who had stayed behind to meet her, and signed all manner of things.

When my turn came, I told Janis about my latest plans for "Observation Two" (yes, I've started on it at last! It will be set in the USA ...). She was very glad to hear about it, and we'll talk later about including some new song lyrics ...

And I got her faithful crewman Yan to take a final photo of us. Thanks Yan: safe journey back to Oz ...

Thanks, Mike. I don't know whether it's because of the messageboard, or the LRC, but I definitely have the feeling that this has been one of Janis' best recent tours of the UK - despite the lack of ice!

It would be great if a UK date could be added in to the Autumn Tour. Otherwise, because of the autobiography it'll be 2008! And boy, will we be waiting for that!

Folk is the New Black is playing here in Ealing at the moment. My review has now appeared on Amazon.co.uk

You know, it would make a huge difference to The Stables if you folks wrote and thanked them for donating their own percentage of the merchandise back to the Pearl Foundation. People are rarely thanked for their good works. If you Rudies are serious about this, please write to:
stables@stables.org
and thanks!

Okay, I've sent my email to The Stables.

Janis, I thought you'd gone to bed? Can't sleep, huh? Jetlag? It's okay. I got it pretty bad, too, when I got home about 3 weeks ago. Wow, has it been three weeks already?
