LONDON (Reuters) - Hopes - or fears - that the Earth has been visited by alien life forms have been dismissed in an official report by British defense specialists.

The Ministry of Defense confirmed Sunday a secret study completed in December 2000 had found no evidence that "flying saucers" or unidentified flying objects were anything other than natural phenomena.

The 400-page report, released under freedom of information laws to an academic from the northern city of Sheffield, concluded that meteors and unusual atmospheric conditions could explain UFO sightings such as bright lights in the sky.

"No evidence exists to suggest that the phenomena seen are hostile or under any type of control, other than that of natural physical forces," the report said, according to extracts quoted by the BBC.

"Evidence suggests that meteors and their well-known effects, and possibly some other less-known effects, are responsible for some unidentified aerial phenomena.

"Considerable evidence exists to support the thesis that the events are almost certainly attributable to physical, electrical and magnetic phenomena in the atmosphere, mesosphere and ionosphere," it said.

A Ministry of Defense (MOD) spokesman said the full report, "Unidentified Aerial Phenomena in the UK Air Defense Region," would be published on its Web site on May 15.

The ministry publishes annual lists of UFO sightings on its Web site, which rank among its most viewed -- and bizarre -- pages.

In 2005 the ministry was asked under freedom of information laws for details of its plans for "dealing with the arrival of extra-terrestrials."

An unnamed defense official replied: "While we remain open-minded, to date the MOD knows of no evidence which substantiates the existence of these alleged phenomena and therefore has no plans for dealing with such a situation."

As one that has seen a ufo I am not believing all of this. Some may be true, not all.

hmmm one thing I don't understand is- why are some people so convinced that these things actually come from outer space?

Personally I have actually seen a ghost, tho I would not necessarily assert that it was a dead person appearing- it could be anything as far as I know.
Just wondering...

Well Des, it was in autumn of 1995, me and my wife had just bought a piece of land in the country of about 60 hectars in size and I was building a house there. Anyways, one night when I was on my way home (that would be my other home not far away) I saw something shining from the corner of my eye.

It was a bright and clear night, the moon was almost full but not that bright....so you could also see the stars, there are no lights where I live except on the farms that are far apart from one another so I can see the nightsky without any disturbance from any lights and that night was a very beautyful night indeed.

So there I was driving home when I saw something shiny from the corner of my eye so I turned my head and looked towards it and sure as you are reading this, there just over the mountain, was a shiny alumnium-greyish object flying in the air.

The mountain, my mountain as I call because I used to live under it, is about 1-1.5 km away from where I was driving and I could see this object very well.
It was a large object, like the biggest airplains in size, it had no wings, no windows that I could see, infact it was just this completely smooth or plain looking shiny-grey object. It had the shape of the body of an airplain, but without the wings or tail. And this object was slowing down, not much speed, it was like it was landing.

I saw it for about 5 seconds before it disapeared behind my mountain.

I stopped my car and waited for about 20 min. to see if I would see it again but that did not happen. Donīt know what it was, so an UFO is what I call it, whatever that means.
