According to the Prez, the IRS was supposed to start disseminating the "Economic Stimulus" payments as of yesterday. First recipients will be those who filed to have their payments by direct deposit. I've been checking my accounts - nothing yet. The payments are supposed to be issued in accordance with the last 2 digits of your SSN - the lower the number, the sooner the payoff. I don't know whose number is used when you are married filing jointly, I its Mr. Oaks, we could be getting it soon, if its mine we are at the end of the line.
They will mail checks later to those who do not have direct deposit.
What will you do with your "stimulus?" We are just paying off credit card debt with ours.

....will be here towards the end of the direct deposit... 96...
Mine will be put towards the $$$ I am saving up to replace windows in my house. The windows appear to be among the first Anderson crank out windows ever made. They are NOT thermapane, and the ones on the west facing side of the house are in very bad shape. The estimate was $500 per window. Between the stimulus check and my regular refund, I should be able to do at least the 6 worst ones this year.

People receiving SSI are not eligible for a "stimulus check". I guess we're not worthy of stimulating. If you are on Social Security Disability, mind, you get the full amount. Hey, it's government, it doesn't have to make sense.

Hoops,
You can still get it even if you did not file a return, but you do have to submit some form, and it is not too late - that is, if you believe what GWB says.

I don't know all the details as to who has to fill out what, but my partner, who is on SSDI, got a notice saying all we had to do is file a 1040EZ and she would get a $300 check.
I am still waiting for my direct deposit....

My housemate, who gets SSD, will get a check. I receive SSI and will get nothing.
Funny thing is, everything I own is paid for, so I really don't have any bills to pay down or mortgage payments, or what have you. $300 would put 10 tanks of gas in my car though.....that would have been nice.

So like the government to withhold the money from those who might need it most...makes sense to them I guess, but not to me.

Even though I'm in good financial straits, I too will use it to pay down debt. Oddly, that's not what they want us to do with it, but I think most of us will. I for one would like to see the money kept at the fed to pay down "our" debt. Novel idea, I know. I love this "gas tax holiday" idea as well, which will shave the price of gas down from $4.00/gallon to a wonderful $3.80 or so. Whoo-Hoo!!! That tax needs to be kept for the highway/infrastructure fund. But what do republicans know about infrastructure? Let them eat cake and drive indestructable SUV's indeed. The real issue is the profit and consumption rate of fuel, not the tax segment.
McCain is talking about stopping the gas tax for a time...how about cutting out the tax breaks for Big Oil? Their record profits recently are simply obscene! There is something so terribly wrong with this government...from King Coal to the war and everything in between...it is hard to know where to start to even try to fix things...how about developing solar and wind and tidal power, using other non-food stuff for ethanol, etc. etc. etc.... There is so much that can be done with a little old fashioned American ingenuity (if there is any left) that will take big business right out of the picture ...you can bet they aren't going to let any of it happen, and neither are our legislators if they keep getting funded by the very businesses that are stymieing our economy aand sending us right into a depression! I really don't know how any of it is going to get fixed, or if it ever will. Talk about a depression...I slide into one everytime I think of this stuff, and wonder if I'm the only one who cares. It's tough to love one's country and see it sliding into oblivion.
See, I think that cutting the tax on gas is not the way to go -- we will eventually have to pay for the programs that get their funding from this tax (like highway maintenance). I'm with Bat..let's stop all the tax breaks that are being handed to Big Oil -- they have proven that they can turn a tidy profit that can sustain itself over and above tax breaks.
And re: the original topic of the thread: I don't so much feel this rebate is "stimulating" for the country as it is flat out screwing the country. Again, we are handing out money we don't have (again, getting bankrolled by China) and we're gonna have to pay for it...maybe not you and me, but certainly our kids and grandkids.

I agree with you, Judy, as I stated above. Bush's solution to everything is a tax cut, when what we need is responsible business', and tax hikes where applicable, this includes those of us at the top.

Ah, Mary.....would be happy to do my best but since I'm only honorary, I don't think I'm allowed to do that sort of thing. One has to be a card-carrying member before stimulating is permitted, so far as I know. Eva will know.

This is directly from the IRS website:
"To receive a payment, taxpayers must have a valid Social Security number, $3,000 of income and file a 2007 federal tax return."
My stimulus has posted to our savings account and will be available tomorrow. As far as paying down the debt - Mr. Oak swerved to avoid hitting a deer and hit a tree instead. Repairing the damage to his truck came to $1300. Oh well, easy come, easy go.
Oak
That's a tough break, Oak! But it may have worse if he'd hit the deer! They do an awful lot of damage to a truck, and have a funny way of coming through the windshield, ending up in the driver's lap with their sharp little hooves flailing away...I think the tree was a better choice if he had to hit something.

I am in the very low digits and still, no rebate. They don't seem to have this well organized. Why am I not surprised?!

Geeze Oak you had me wondering there for a minute. :D Supposedly the deposits began earlier than scheduled but nothing in my account yet. And the new Where's My Refund? (https://sa2.www4.irs.gov/irfof/lang/en/irfofgetstatus.jsp) tool on the IRS website didn't work for me.

Marcia,
If you got your refund by direct deposit, you will be in the first batch of people to get the rebate. If you got it by snail mail, the rebate checks will not go out until later.

Not yet today.

Sorry to hear that, Eva. You want me to send President Bush over there?

i'm, still not counting on getting a check, don't want to get my hopes up. but if it happens it will be a lovely surprise. i'm one of the lucky people who is not allowed to use a credit card while i pay off my dept which i have one month left. i've lived 5 years without one i don;t think i need one, i certaily don;t need the bills. just getting to keep the money i spent paying them off will be gift enough for me.
