I've been hearing about this quite a bit on the news lately and just wonder if anyone knows about it or is involved in it.

The Freecycle Network

The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,288 groups with 4,659,000 members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them's good people). Membership is free. To sign up, find your community by entering it into the search box above or by clicking on “Browse Groups” above the search box. Have fun!

I'll be looking into it more since I think it's a great concept.

when i was awarded my new flat by social housing they recommended freecycle to me, they have a Nottingham branch.

It is a great idea as so many people have perfectly good stuff they don't need which would otherwise go to landfill.

You've just reminded me about freecycle Dee, I shall have a look as I still need a few things for my new place :)

Looks intresting, they even got some local group in my rock, in Reykjavík to be more precise. Really a great idea this is.

Yes, they have local groups pretty much all over the United States and in I forget how many other countries. You can find a number of the groups at Yahoo Groups.

There are two in my area. Every now and then someone offers something I can use but someone else generally gets there first....sigh.

I love freecycle! I've gotten rid of a lot of old glass windowpanes that have been here since year one...some woman came and got them and said her husband did stained glass work...she was as happy to get them as I was to get rid of them!
Also had some windows replaced this fall and one woman came and took the old ones...wanted to make a hotframe for starting plants. Again, we were both delighted!
Have gotten rid of everything from old but nice toilet seats to vanities, sink, all the stuff that was in an old bathroom that we redid.
I'd like to find a good place to sell stuff that I really don't want to just give away, but can't really get a lot of money for...stuff that would go to goodwill but, face it, I could use the money, too! I should have a yard sale, but just to darned lazy and unorganized to do it...easier to put something online and see who bites. Sorta fun, like fishing.
