Dutch women race down trendy street in stiletto heels, vying for $15,000 prize

Thursday, March 6, 2008

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - Like a herd of antelope, jockeying and shoving for position, 150 young women raced down Amsterdam's most famed fashion street in stiletto heels Thursday, racing for a $15,000 prize.

The race on the P.C. Hooft street called the "Stiletto Run" is only three years old but has quickly grown in popularity and spawned imitation races in Germany, Sweden, Poland and Russia.

The race's motto is "Shopping is a Sport" and friendly competition is encouraged, though not always observed.

"At the start there was a lot of pushing, you really get elbowed over," said Fauve Stukje, 18, who came with a small entourage and a big pink sign, but failed to win, show or place.

She said she slightly regretted her choice of shoes, which were nearly 10 centimetres high - a little higher than the nine-centimetre minimum.

Tamara Ruben, 25, from the town of Veenendaal, claimed first prize in the 115-metre race, running so smoothly you might think she was wearing sneakers.

Asked how she would spend the money, she said: "Anything but high heels."

Ah yes, the Stiletto Run. I know it Dee. Thank you. 'Unfortunately' my heels are 'only' 9 cm's high maximum. And besides, the running would ruin them I'm afraid... But to be honest, I have thought about entering the race. Just for the fun of it. But in the end I think I am better at sackraces.

Um....Dee? You might need to be a bit more specific about the type of "sack".

Sure as a high heel on concrete. . .

Who sponsors these races? Undoubtedly your friendly local orthopedist.

Hmm, is there more than one kind of sack race Dave?

(Perhaps we had better let Eva respond to your question.) :p

You asked for it Dave...

Oak, the sponsors are the trendy fashionshops in the street where the race is held. Also a clothes designer, a shoestore, a champagnebrand and the usual sodabrand.

Well... tell me that isn't what he meant? That it was all one big language mixup of which I was the innocent victim :o

By the way Dee. I love your tagline :D

Over here, a sack race is usually both feet in a sack...with the best tactics involving getting a toe in each bottom corner so as to give maximum stride length...not easy to do, very easy to fall on one's kiester.
We also have 3-legged races, where 2 people tie the inside legs together and run as a team...hopefully.
What in the world is in those sacks your guys are wearing? Looks like cement overshoes!!

Okay, no disrespect to our dear Eva - but everytime I think about stiletto heels I remember the line denouncing high heels & womens' health: A spine is a terrible thing to waste.

Well, that was the one I was actually talking about :D I am good at that one. In school I was always the worst in anything even resembling sports. But sack races were my thing. I always beat everyone. All those stupid kids started hopping around and would get very tired halfway, almost falling over their sacks (Dave! Careful...) while I just stick my small feet in a corner and ran to the other side as fast as I could. A guaranteed win. Ha!

Judy dear, non taken. I must have told you before how high heels need to be worn? I mean, they are not meant to run on. Or even walk or stand on for more than 10 minutes. I'll look it up for you what the exact correct way is... By the way: I hardly wear high heels too. Just on special occasions. And since I have small feet, I don't want them too high anyway. The proportions have to be right, you know. I care a lot for good quality, beautiful shoes, but that can mean very comfy shoes too. Not only high heels :)

Dee, of course I am innocent! As always... :o

When I saw that race my first thought was "EVA". It's as though I know her, and she is, like, my close personal friend, (a quote I have borrowed from Dr. Oak). Then I thought, Why were those shoes invented?:D

Aaaaaawww... that's sweet of you. Thank you.

And why were those shoes invented? Ehm... this is a familymessageboard... so let me put it this way: to let women's legs appear longer and their feet smaller as this is considered attractive. Will that explanation do?

Judy, I can't find it anymore. But I'll try to do it from the top of my head...
How does one wear high heels? For instance if you go to a party...
1. Put on your partyclothes and some very comfortable shoes in which you can drive.
2. When you arrive at the party, leave the comfy shoes in the car and put on the killer high heels.
3. Make a grand entrance and make sure everybody notices your shoes. Do this for a maximum of 10 minutes. Maybe 15 if you're really tough. While your greeting people, already start scanning for a place to sit.
4. Sit down and stay there. If children or in any case people who are able-bodied, non-pregnant and under a certain age who have no high heels on sit in the chair you had meant for yourself, you are allowed to ask them to give their chair to you. A smile and pointing to your high heels will usually do the trick with butches and men :D
5. Let other people get you drinks.
6. If this is a polite sit and talk party than you're safe untill the end of the evening. In that case do 1 to 3 in reverse when you leave.
7. Keep your shoes on for the photo opportunity. That and your grand entrance is how people will remember you.
8. If it's a danceparty then do get completely drunk, kick your shoes off under the table and dance wildly and barefoot.
9. Let your partner swing you over their shoulder and take you home. Let them hold your shoes in their hand. It looks good.
10. When you get home, soak your feet for about 15 minutes.
11. Complain for a week about how tough it was to be on heels 'all night' while it actually only was about 30 minutes: your grand entrance, the photo opportunity and maybe you leaving the party (if you were not drunk)

Dave, you must be one of those men who have to give up their seats all the time right? Know that it is very appreciated
Or did you have a girlfriend once who wore her high heels in the way I described? :D
Or are you wearing high heels yourself and are you wondering why you don't manage to stand / dance on them for an entire evening?

Back in the day, I used to wear heels - but with age and flattening feet...I'm a continual frustration to my daughter who has SERIOUS shoe issues.
