View Full Version : going into hospital

next week I am going into hospital for an operation- you don't really want to know, but it will involve my rear end being cut open
am going in at the beginning of the week for some pre-op blood tests and an ECG....
I am surprisingly relaxed at the moment, probably because a year of pain will soon come to an end I hope- but I know I will get nervous as the date approaches - I have never had an operation in my life- so the thought of a general anaesthetic and the post-op pain for a couple of weeks is not appealing.....
so I just wanted to whinge here and ask for sympathy!
:)

(((David))) We're here for you.
Ouch sounds painful (not what you want to hear)
Ouch, if it's anything worse than my Colonic Hydrotherapy...(still not what you want to hear)
Ouch, I too have never been for an operation (I'm crap at this I know)
No, seriously though...you'll be Okay, take me word for it:rolleyes:
We will all be thinking of you David, good luck! (Okay, I'm outta here)

Going under anesthesia is no prob. You wake up and it is all over. As for after, you will have some pain, but also pain meds. Make sure they give you what you need for pain, and before you know it, all will be well again.
Best of luck!
As we have previously discussed David, you know I have plenty of sympathy for you ... or more precisely, empathy.
I'm so glad you will finally be able to get beyond this torment.

Eat healthy over the weekend and drink a lot of pure water. Get plenty of rest.

Thanks everyone- after a year of pain and misdiagnosis by the National Health Service it is great to be taken seriously by a surgeon and to be told that I do not have a bad case of piles, but something completely different that requires an op....
sorry if this is too much info for some people :p

David, Good luck to you! I'm sure everything will be just fine.
Oh poor puppy! (I know you are a cat temporarily, but hopefully SongDragon will give you the antidote to that) Yes, this is a real pain in the butt. I couldn't have said it better, Dar.
David, do you have someone to take care of you for a few days after you come home? I can imagine that those first days will be the hardest. I wish you a speedy recovery and that it al won't hurt too much.
If you do feel like yelping, than let me know. You can sit in my lap, drink milk and I'll scratch you behind your ear. Oh wait, you are not really a puppy... Oh well...

David. I'll be thinking healing and pain-free thoughts for you! I have been a wimp (on occasion) but also been through a lot. They make great anesthesia these days. One minute you're talking to someone and the next minute you are waking up and it's all finished! Remember to ask for Phenergan right away if you are anything like me and have a bad stomach!! It takes away nausea from the anesthesia.
Marcia :o
Edited to fix a typo, thanks Bat.....

Demand drugs for the post op pain David. They know how to gradually decrease the dosage so by the time you leave you should feel less and less pain.

David sorry you have to go under the knife it must be very unnerving. Try not to worry and know that you are in my prayers for a safe and effective procedure problem free with a speedy recovery.
PS I love the new avatar.
Dave, I'm glad you finally found a good doc who listens to what you have to say and acts on it! Best to you and your bum. I have been sliced and diced a couple years ago, not the same op, but still major surgery. Everyone said I'd be nauseous when I woke up...the first thing I wanted was Pizza! They gave me nasty OXO boullion, and that did make me sick...anything too salty will do that anyway. So Marcia brought me pizza and I was fine. See, we know what's best for us!
I think she meant to say "Phenergan"...great stuff if you do get urky.
You will probably feel rotten for a few days, then things will start feeling much better and you'll get well. Especially if they do a nice suture job.
So, keep us in the loop and write as soon as you can! Be a baby and get the meds you need to keep the pain in control...as I said, a good suture job will make things much better very soon. I hope his mother taught the surgeon to sew when he was a little boy...or girl...?
Best of luck and take it very easy...we are thinking of you and want you back in good shape!
Hugs,

(((HUGS)))
Patience my son, "the end" of your miseries is near! ;) :)
I wish you well for Friday David. Just lay back and think of the LRC and you will sail through ;)
Get yourself a thick piece of foam and cut a hole in the middle to sit on after the op. Years ago I had an op in the same place and had a blow up rubber ring but I don't think you can get them any longer.
Rowy
Of course you can buy them, Rowy! David, go to a toystore or something and buy yourself that rubber blow-up ring which children who can't swim yet usually wear around their waist. My dad sat on a thing like that when he got an operation 'there'. Maybe they'll have one for you with a cool puppy-print, David!
Take care!

Or at least Spongebob Squarepants. I recall when my brother had a cyst removed from that particular area....he had a lovely inflatable ring with a duck's head on one side. No, I'd not going to tell you where he positioned it when he sat on the thing.

thanks Rowy for your wishes
unfortunately, my pain follows me around whether I am sitting down, standing up or lying down..... worst of all when I move... so I doubt a rubber ring will help... i am going for the pre-op assessment on Tuesday so will ask all kinds of questions then....
thanks again everyone for your rudie vibes x

Hey David, our thoughts will be with you. My thoughts won't even make any rude comments... Glad you have a surgeon who takes you seriously. I've only really ever been in the hospital once, for something nice and easy (that tonsilectomy last summer), so I don't really know what to say except we'll be thinking of you fellow rudie!

Well i have had over 40 operations, some big, some small. Like others have said, the surgery itself is no big deal - your asleep and then your awake and it is over. Get lots of pain meds and sleep as much as possible. We'll all be pulling for you.

just came back from my pre-op assessment at the hospital. It was fine. I spent about an hour with a pre-op assessment nurse who was like a stuffy old matron, but with a wicked sense of humour. She really put me at ease...
When I took off my shirt she looked at my tattoos and said "what on EARTH are those?" and made me burst out laughing... and when she was telling me what I need to take with me to the hospital she said "and don't forget your toiletries and shaving things... that's if you ever DO shave, it doesn't look like you do...!"
She had me in stiches and didn't mind me answering her in the same way.
After that I just had a medical questionnaire, a urine test and blood test and she talked me through the timetable for the operation - I feel MUCH more relaxed about it now, after an hour with Nurse Laura:p
roll on Friday and and end to pain!
sorry if I have bored people with this thread, but it's my first ever operation...
Irish Beth, your words were the most encouraging of all!:)
