So, being a "newbie" around these parts... I ask your advice....'
So far I have:
Folk Is The New Black
Billy's Bones
Live at Club Cafe dvd
and, I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Through the Years DVD.
So, what should I get next to listen http://www.clipartof.com/images/emoticons/xsmall2/1979_listening_to_music_at_a_party.gif (http://www.clipartof.com/) to out of the Janis catalogue? Any suggestions http://www.clipartof.com/images/emoticons/xsmall2/2404_worship.gif (http://www.clipartof.com/) all wise(cracking) and all knowing Rudies?

Well... let me think... my suggestions would be:
Working without a net (Janis live and definetely at her very best)
Between the Lines (as an early classic Janis album)

Great advice from Mimi. Working Without A Net is a great 2-cd "live" collection of many of Janis' greatest songs. Of course, I think they're all great! "Between The Lines" is a classic and a MUST have! Then, you could add "Breaking Silence" and one of my favorites, "Night Rains."
Don't stop until you have them all!!!
Marcia :)

Well if you ask me I would say the natural choice, given what you owe are.....
Firstly.........Breaking Silence, thatīs a must and a classic.
Secondly....god and the fbi, goosebump record.........
I would recoment them.

Working Without a Net is a good overview. That's the one I would suggest. Between the Lines, for sure. I have favorites on all the albums, so I'm hard-pressed to rank them beyond that.

Well Mary...
I agree with everybody... No matter what you get you will not be disapointed but in my case I would suggest (1) STARS... (2) Working without a net and (3) Night Rains...
Best to you and yours...

If you can wait till late March I am coming over to the USA and can bring some spare CDs - which I can mail to you when I get Stateside. Please note these are the "original" CDs and not the higher quality re-mastered versions.
You can have:
Stars;
Between the Lines (signed by Janis);
Aftertones and
Miracle Row.
All that I ask in return is a donation to the Pearl Fund - $5 per CD. Shipping is on me; just private message me your address and which ones you want.

Up til now
working without a net
because they will give you an overview of much of janis's work which I find helps in choosing the next album. any way you do it, enjoy the ride, it took Janis more than 40 years to get to where she is, take your time...love it all

I was thinking Working Without a Net was a good next to get. I do love listening to live albums, they usually give you a good overview of an artist's catalogue, and then I go back to the originals.
Thanks for all your suggestions.... and of course... I will eventually get them all.
Anna, I PM'd you, too.

I agree that Working Without a Net is a good place to start. That was one of the first two that I bought.

We're putting "Souvenirs" on sale (in North America, for the first time!) any moment now... I'd suggest that, and Working Without a Net, personally.
I have two copies of Souvenirs. The first I'd bought here in Malaysia (I think the CD was initially only available in Asia, and Malaysia is in Asia). The second was a gift that came with my 2007 Holiday Sale order. There was also a "Compliments of the Artist" card in the package, so I assumed the CD came from the Artist herself. Thanks, Janis!

Now I'm sure Janis wouldn't steer you wrong Mary. ;) I received Souvenirs in my Holiday pkg from a member of the JIMB. I especially liked it because it introduced me to 4 songs I had never heard before! Janis' music is addicting, the more you hear, the more you want.

Yes, her songs ARE addicting... like the song says... "Folk is the new black.... better than crack".... :D
I will review all suggestions.... but Working Without a Net will probably be next

I got Souvenirs very quickly after the Queen's Hall Concert in 2006, I thoroughly recommend it. And (with Kathleen Brogan's help, actually) now I'm more or less up to speed.... Thank you Janis for all the lovely music. Each time I put a CD in my player I find it very diffficult to evict it for something else (another Janis CD :) )
And yes, Janis, Working Without A Net was the first CD I bought too, but being nervous I only produced 3 booklets... Night Rains, Folk is the New Black and Between the Lines. I now have a truckload of stuff for signatures which will get dealt with as soon as...:)

Personally, Miracle Row and Breaking Silence are very very special to me.
I also adore Present Company, as it brings me back to being a senior in high school again. What can I say, I'm a sentimental old sap!
But truly, there's not a bad recording in the bunch!
Working Without A Net
Between The Lines

Restless Eyes

Just a few thoughts and impressions, and I'm by no means an expert:
Being rather a political cynic, I really like "God and the FBI"...for really making one think, I think the most powerful song Janis has ever done is "Tattoo".
Neither one are 'feel good' songs, but definitely a necessary segment of the folk music scene.
The most ridiculous song is "Crocodile", the funniest is the Marriage Song, "If I had Boots like Emmy Lou" is just plain fun.
"Ride me like a Wave" and "Cosmopolital Girl" are quite evocative, provocative and sensual in different ways....
But Janis on piano is pure pleasure, and probably the sexiest thing she does, publicly.

Breaking Silence, Between the Lines and Working Without a Net (WWAN). I'm a huge fan of the 2 Unreleased - Take No Prisoners project as well.

"Breaking Silence" has the most glorious audio quality of any CD I own (and my collection includes a fair number of "audiophile discs"). Brilliant lyrics, top-notch musicianship....what more could one ask?
If I was ever able to afford a $5,000 stereo this would be the first album I would play on it.

The New "Live in Japan & Australia" is an absolute must!! A perfect performance, start to finish!!!

Gisli, when I first heard "Tattoo", I couldn't fathom what I was hearing...and then I was incredulous, unbelieving; ... surely, no one would write a song about Nazi Prison Camps Internees, would they? ...I guess Janis could write a song about tree bark and it would be worth listening to, but Tattoo is one of her very best...makes one think, and cry and gnash teeth at the inhumanity of man, and that's what great folk songs do, isn't it? ...among other things?
