Coming down from either New Hampshire or Maine. This oughta be good. Road trip! I may just have to bring Caroline. Hehe... Don't say "Song" or "Jennifer" 'till you check for the long hair!
:p
I've still got to book a room and such, but I want to make sure I can get down there first, as I don't have a car (though I use the van during summer, I'm not sure that car would survive such a long trip) or may be flying. Nifty. I'm saving up!!!
Camera is a must... Since I keep managing to forget it.

Dar, Its about the same distance as the public park i was considering.. It's a good 20 minute haul. Depending on the numbers of ravenous rudies, I may rent transportation to get folks to and from. I just couldn't say no to Greg's offer, having a site fully wired for power and sound already was just too good to walk away from.
As to Agnes, well i sorta deputized her :)
Hoops my dear, nice try.. but i'm still in therapy for the trauma Lexa caused with a five minute ride ...four blocks up the street!

Hey Ben, I don't mean to sound obsessive (I am a little OCD:p ) but does your very generous friend have adequate toilet facilities? I'm thinking that portable loos may be needed.
You know I have ISYEWS with dunnies in your country.:D
I am volunteering to make my delicious garlic sauce. (Ask Leslie and/or the Florida girls if it is worth it.) That is apart from my serious duty of keeping the chef(s) lubricated. :D

No worries my dear, you aren't obsessive at all.. *I* wasn't happy with the facilities we had at that park. Greg and I have discussed rental of some portable units to supplement what he already has. He mentioned something else about a small addon building he's putting together possibly being temporarily refitted as additional facilities. We'll have it all taken care of.
I'm gonna take you up on that Garlic sauce!

From Gregs description, his neighbors are some distance away from his property. We may however mock some livestock that wanders in from time to time.

Good article, Lucille! I love garlic and use it every chance I get, buy a bulb or 2 every month...Have you tried Elephant Garlic? It's HUGE and delicious.
The Garlic press is always within easy reach, too...I think I'm an honorary Italian.
Hoops, get a blender! I never bought baby food when my kids were little...I just took the roast and potatoes and veggies and tossed them all in the blender, together or separately, depending on the veggies, and the kids loved it. (I took one taste of commercial baby food and tossed it as it was so salty I couldn't stand it. I mean, a little salt is essential, but having grown up in a household where my dad was a heart patient, we hardly used any in cooking, just salted at the table to taste. I forgot as often as not. Also, veggies cooked in salt water taste as bad as canned, which I detest...give me Freshlike, which doesn't can with salt, or frozen, if I can't have fresh.)
End of rant. Anyway, you can have anything you want as long as it's fine enough, right? So blend the stuff and enjoy the flavor!

The Garlic press is always within easy reach, too
Hey Bat
A friend of mine who was a top chef in Melbourne gave me some advice about garlic. He said it should never be pressed. It should be chopped, because, in his words, 'the crap that comes out of the press has lost all it's juice, and the flavour goes'. So I bought myself one of these, which I must say is fantastic. He also said you can store "chopped garlic" in olive oil in the 'fridge. So I have a chopping frenzy every now and again, and always have chopped garlic on hand. Hopefully I am not telling you how to suck eggs.:D

PS You may not know it, but Melbourne has some of the best restaurants in the world. (Ask Janis ;) )

What a great birthday gift to give myself, hedonist that I am and best yet, I'll be sharing my birthday with BGG! One question though... As I was perusing a list of flight choices, I see this : These results cover a metro area with several airports. Which airport would I fly in to? I know Pittsburgh has grown in the 38 years since I've been there, but sheesh, several airports now? I guess I need the call letters for the right airport. I'll be leaving from DIA (Denver International Airport).

The accomodations in Pittsburgh are actually quite nice. However these porta-pots are (I'm certain) a step up from what we had in the park.....
Having said that, I hear tell that THIS year we will have a fancy-shmancy place for our JanNic, JaniQue, RudieQue...whatever you want to call it. Maybe we should just call it a plain ol' BBQ....otherwise is sounds like we're putting Janis or a Rudie on the spit!!

Those amenities were deplorable and I let the park management know it too.
That'd be some very old and stringy mutton, but i suppose that would be the ultimate test of my skill...if i could make him tender and succulent. Spit cooking looks cool, but i'm a fan of the pig in the pit style, takes longer but man does that make some juicy tasty grub!

OK--as I understand it, things will be wrapped up on Saturday night? Anyone sticking around into Sunday? Perhaps even Monday? Trying to figure out who I might be able to wheedle a ride out of since I just might be able to afford this if I don't have to rent a car.
Midwest Airlines has had some decent fares that would involve arriving on Friday afternoon and leaving Sunday afternoon/evening. The question being, in the present climate, whether a carrier of their size will still be in business by August. However, as I am assured that they have already started winding up the rubber bands on their Regional Jets, they do seem eager for customers.
Can't wait to see where their gate is hidden at Minneapolis/St. Paul. If you don't fly Northwest out of there, it's generally something of a treasure hunt to find your gate and even then, a matter of some question as to whether your aircraft will actually be directed there.

Good morning all
This summer is shaping up really great concert wise... Just a note to those attending JannicII... The Tuesday following the picnic Janis will be performing at Musikfest, in Bethlehem Pa (about 5 miles from home).... Should anybody wish to and not mind "ROUGHING IT" a bit Betty and I usually have at least one empty appartment We have a couple air mattresses and sofas available space in the living room for crashing free should anybody want to travel the 300miles to Easton Pa... We also have off street parking and a large yard to sit in on the outskirts of town... During that week there is lots going on with Musikfest... On Monday night BOSTON will be one of the featured acts... Then Janis on Tuesday at I believe a FREE venue... Now what could be better??? Just for the record we are direct line between Pittsburgh and Manhatten... (Just about 70 miles from Manhatten and two miles from New Jersey)...
If your curious about other acts see available see musikfest.org
Anyway the offer is here... This is NOT a solicitation ... just a free offer to our rudie friends that don't mind roughing it abit... Yes Marjan and Annette that even includes you :)
Best to you all
R & B
Ps... I have a closet full of stuff sent by Janis going to the picnic to be auctioned off.... You don't want to miss it.....

Dave, there will be plenty of us with cars. You don't need to worry about getting around. There is also a shuttle between the hotel and the airport.
DaveM
04-05-2008, 03:14 PM
Are pirates included in that invitation? That just might be very attractive indeed. Besides which, airfares drop significantly if I can extend my stay a couple of days.
I am a reasonably good guest, am housebroken, and can sleep on the soft side of a board if need be.

Hey Dave,
The invite stands for anyone willing to rough it a bit... If you don't mind smokers we can even give you a ride from Pittsburgh to Easton... (Just under 300 miles but I'm not riding in the trunk) I would suggest flying back from Lehigh Valley International in Allentown, Pa... We are planning on leaving Pittsburgh probably early Sunday afternoon to get back here in time to relax for a bit... After all Boston is in concert Monday night... Tuesday is Janis... I don't know if it will be day or night as yet... Perhaps Janis or someone on staff can get her performance times at Musikfest for us...
If you have any questions let me know...
Best
R.

I don't mind roughing it or smokers....how far are you from Pittsburgh? Not sure if I can arrange a return flight from Allentown without a big jump in the airfare, but I will look.
I do draw the line at riding in the trunk, though I have accepted invitations that required riding in the back of a pickup truck. The guerrilla school of travel can be a true delight, as much for the inevitable surprises as for the planned activities.

how far are you from Pittsburgh?
We are 296.6 miles... We are in Easton Pa... Bethlehem Pa on one side and Phillipsburg, NJ on the other....
Well Dave see what you think... The invite is there...

That would be me, Dave! "Thank you for calling ATA. How may I help you?" ;) If you are booking online, click the "multi-city" option. It's usually by the "one way" link. Anymore, it's really no more expensive (depending on locations) to book that way rather than round-trip.
If you have trouble, let me know.
Alas, it was sad when ATA went belly-up the other day.

Well Mary if you and the other rudies don't mind reliving the 60's and communial living come on down... Janis is performing in August here just a couple miles from the house... You all can get a good night sleep or hang out for a couple days to enjoy Musikfest... It's not fancy but it is free and clean... You all might want to drag along sleeping bags though... We have a couple air mattresses appropriate broken in and comfort tested by Marjan & Annette... Theres a bathroom, refrig.... and kitchen if needed... though within a quarter mile is CITY DINER which we eat at often and RICHARDS which is a hot dog/ICE CREAM JOINT both within easy walking distance... A large yard with a tent thinging for sitting in during the days and evenings... Even screened to keep out the Mosquittos... and off street parking...The house comes equiped with our resident rudie and rudie-dog Carol & Nikki....
During the summer months we sometimes sit out in the tent and enjoy the air until well into the morning
Gem... we haven't heard from you in a bit.... Are you coming to Musikfest or Sellersville?
Best to all

Well I finally booked my flights! At this moment, I'm solo, however no sooner did we book everything for that week then Peggy learns that the wedding plans might be changing. So she may still join me. When she heard Marjan was coming, she was about ready to abandon her family just to see her.
Marjan, is there something I need to know?? ;) ;)
I'm flying in on Friday arriving at about 2:00, plenty of time for a late lunch and then dinner yes? Leaving on Sunday at 3:00. I don't think that will allow Kennywood Park, whatever that is, but hopefully I'll have companions for a Bob Evans feed before you all head to that park?

I am waffling. It looks as if I am going to have another commitment which involves air travel in early August, and I simply cannot mentally, physically, or financially handle two trips halfway across the continent in the course of one week (I know, I know, we're talking about a Janis event here, but the other one will help to pay the rent....and perhaps buy Janis tickets somewhere down the line).
For reasons best known to the airlines, tickets from Minnesota to Pittsburgh are exhorbitant, though there are periodic specials which are more than reasonable and seem to come at the very last minute. The fares I've been able to find thus far would bring the cost of the weekend to over $1000 if a friend accompanies me....I'm afraid I'm going to have to bow out.
This may change should my other travel plans change or should I have some good luck with the airfare. But that's how it looks right now. Sigh.

Trish you are welcome to come, I'm asking $30 a person to cover costs of food, accessories, etc.. Anything left over out of the general fund goes to the Pearl Foundation. There will be an Auction of authentic Janis Ian memorabila that was so graciously provided by Janis herself, or maybe it was Pat's 'Get this stuff the hell outta here' comment to Janis that provided the stuff..but either way we got it and we're auctioning it off.

I think what they have are the single rooms and then the rooms that have a separate bedroom and then a sleeper sofa in the common area, where the kitchen is, so that it can accomodate four people. I actually booked one of these larger spaces, but especially since Peggy might not be coming, I certainly don't need all the room. I got that so I could entertain in my room and have my/our bed be separate and behind a door.
If all they have available is the single rooms, book that, and maybe we can swap rooms when we get there.

Or better still, a nice limo with a driver after I win the 25 million on the lottery this Friday night.
Perhaps the Janic III can be in the rented ballroom of a nice hotel here, all expenses paid of course.

hmm.. I had toyed with streaming video at some point, don't know that i'll have the bandwidth for that, but we may be able to record the gathering and put up a movie for you to join in the festivities.
anyone with a digital camcorder that would like to volunteer for this project?
I'll be bringing a video camcorder, and I know Leslie and Kath & Lucille will be too, so we should be able to get a few candid camera shots between us. Kath knows how to put it on to emails via AOL/Flip. She has sent me some great vids over the last week or so.

Unfortunately, Ben, the "Flip" digital format requires that you have editing software that allows you to convert from their format to standard DVD. Without it, those DVDs can only be viewed on a computer. It's a real pain in the patootie!

Also, it will be easier to compare our surgical scars.... I have two zippers on my right knee that will knock your socks off! Let's all make up good stories like they did in "Jaws"!
Cool! I'll show off the dip in my bone that I have on my chest. It's a real eyecatcher. Luckily there's no hair growing there, like on your legs :o

Thought I'd bring this thread back to the top - the Pittsburgh RudieQue is nearly here - the world will never be the same!
Along with Mr. Oak, I plan to be hauling every musical instrument I can lay my hands on at home if we can cram it all in my station wagon - including a box o' crap for Dar to shake.
Redjack, I assume at some point you will be providing directions from the hotel to the venue, or do we need to PM you for reasons of operational security?

Greg has assured me that we will have power for the picnic as well, so if anyone wants to bring electric instruments, camcorders, etc. we should be good to go for that as well. I do want to record some of the events to share with Dee and others who aren't able to attend. FLV devices are fine, i can transcode the streams if need be.
We're getting together some official volunteer drivers to ferry the rudie mob to and from the picnic. I will make sure there are plenty of maps for those who wish to drive on their own as well. We'll have them at the hotel in the courtesy suite.

Ok route talk....just what I need.
Ehmmm we, me and my wife have had to change our travel-plan, at first we were going to fly to Toronto and visit some friends over there and then drive from there to Pittsburgh......we recheduled and are now flying to New York on thursday or friday. Will be renting a car......question is: How long a drive is it to Pittsburgh from New York?
And we will be needing safe directions.........so Diver-boy, what day are you scheduling to leave, no problem to pick you up if the time and date are convinient to both?

Offhand i'm going to say its about 8 to 10 hours from New York City to Pittsburgh, but i'll doublecheck that and work out a route for you to avoid the insane construction on the roads as much as possible.

Yeah, it's quite a drive. The train takes even longer. The Amtrak system is nothing like European systems. (About half of our elected officials want to stop funding it all together.) There isn't a direct route from New York to Pittsburgh, so there'd be a change at Philadelphia and a several hour wait in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. I did the trip on Amtrak from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh once and it alone took 6 hours.
