So no train and maybe no flying....Diver Boy our flight from Iceland arrives around eight in the afternoon. Would driving and sleeping over in a motel after say 3hours drive sound like something that would fit in your schedule?

That way we could be in Pittsburgh around noon or so.

Would anyone else like a ride to Pittsburgh????

Hmm, the amtrak website does list the Pennsylvanian departing every day (and on August 1st at 10:05 am from New York Penn Station) for US$60 per person. Not bad. Travel time about 9 hours, though I expect that to be slightly on the short side. Amtrak is notoriously late. I'd say go for it. Cheaper than driving. I hadn't looked at the time tables for the Pennsylvanian in a while.

You'd be going right near my undergraduate college!

Yikes....

Gisli my friend a couple things....

1) Your looking at a 6 to 8 hour drive to Pittsburgh....

2) After the picnic if your leaving from New York as well you and yours might want to visit Betty and I as we are in a direct line from New York to Pittsburgh... (292 miles from Pittsburgh and 70 miles from Manhatten) Let me know and we can put you up for a couple nights if you don't mind roughing it a bit and staying in a basically bare bones empty apartment... (Complete with Air mattresses, music, TV, refrigerator and bathroom...)

3) If you decide to visit with us the Rock band BOSTON will be performing on Monday night and you can see Janis again at a FREE concert on Tuesday at Musikfest (5 miles from home)... Musikfest offers lots of free acts all over the city and reasonably priced feature concerts...so theres plenty to do during the day if you want to go wander...

Let us know if your interested

good lord, from jfk...it's about 2 hours to the jersey border with traffic.
i hate that drive with a passion -- had to pick up my cousin last year who flew in from poland and she got JFK when we told her to go to Newark...

the traffic is a nightmare. hopefully they'll be arriving where they won't have to sit in bad traffic. :-/

the drivers on the belt parkway are extremely defensive

gisli,
it's all about patience, just think of it as an opportunity to see the what NYC driving is like, it can be a great learning experience. put on th a/c and make it an enjoyable ride. once you get into pennsylvania, the country is really lovely and the tunnels are a lot of fun. it's all about attitude.

Gísli, make sure you don't drive too fast. I have noticed there is much more police on the road as in Europe usually. Well, at least in California. There was a freaking sheriff at every freaking exit! Don't these people have work to do!?

Hoops, don't send somebody else to do your dirty work! All's fair in stuff like water ballooning...heh heh:p

I was sort of thinking we could gang up on DB, but it's not to be. It's beyond me how he can think work could possibly be more important than the Jannic, though...that boy has to get his priorities straight, and put in for a couple vacation days ahead of time, don't ya think?
We're all pretty disappointed, Chris, not just you. :(

mandatory meeting -- otherwise.......i dont know
is the picnic on a saturday or sunday? thats the problem... i would have to bus it since i can't get ride out there now because of stupid friday meeting.
grrr (i had those days off already requested, but alas i got screwed over)

Bat
07-16-2008, 10:10 PM
A MEETING!!! You're gonna miss the Jannic because of one of those F***ing 'mandatory' meetings? Unless your job is at stake, it will be the most boring meeting you've ever attended with nothing to do with you and your department, I'll bet. You ought to check into what it is all about, and see why they called it on that particular day. You could get really sick about nine a.m., too...just thinking... Guess I'd better stop thinking.

diver_boy
07-16-2008, 10:17 PM
sure could ;)
I'll see what i can do.....
but right now i'm about pissed
trust me, i would do the train ride - stay there, spend the night and come right back

Oak Kitten

Y'know DB,

I heard that there is this 72-hour virus making the rounds in your neck of the woods, the onset is very sudden - usually late Thursday night, and it knocks you out of commission until Monday morning. Better watch out, you might catch it.

Oak

Elliott
07-17-2008, 10:37 PM
Hey DB, what's with that dry cough and itchy nose? Are you running a little fever, or feeling achy? You don't look that good to me.... Do you need a doctor's note to return to work after missing that mandatory meeting.... can't you just read the minutes or something? I sure would hate for the whole office to get very, very sick because you are to selfish to stay home, in bed, and pamper yourself. I feel if you are too sick to work, it's your duty to stay home and get well so you can give 100% when you go back to work on Monday..... or Tuesday. That's just my opinion. Hope you feel better next week! ;)

Eva
07-18-2008, 04:28 AM
Migraines work for me. Thery only last a day. And it's (by accident of course) that very Friday! And no, of course you are not home if your suspicious supervisor (now why would that be?) calls you. You went over to a friend so they could take care of you.

Eva

aabram
07-18-2008, 12:26 PM
DB. You are OFF SICK, OK? If the boss doesn't like it, TOUGH. But because he knows you want that weekend, better go down with your (Ahem...) 72-hour virus a couple of days early because 1) that'll give you more time to get there and 2) it will stop him from suspecting too much. Get your 'Doctor's Note" sorted first though, even if you have to pay him for it! :) YOU'RE GOING....NO BUTS.

Just got confirmation on the flight and car so adventure in the making.

This is the first time in our life together that I can take her on a journey that hasnt been "pre-programmed" from day one......

Randy, thank you for the invitation, it would be an honour to visit you and Betty at your home if me and the mrs go by your neighbourhood.

PS Diver-Boy, sorry to read you cant make it, but if you change plan there are two empty seats in the back of my rent-a-car for you or any other Rudie that would like to make use of this journey of ours from JFK-airport, no problem to make a small detour if anyone is intrested. Will be arriving just after noon on thursday 31 of july.

To claim it all you need to do is post excerts from a surden Autobiography to this forum http://www.janisian.com/forum/index.php and you will be rewarded....million times......by a euro.....pean:o

Seriously, glad you had a safe journey, have lots of fun in America, see you soon.

I have been snoozing in my room in NYC for most of the day, and Marjan just rang me from her room. Watch out America - the (part) Dutch/Australian contingent has arrived:D Obviously we are both pooped, but will go out for some food, and check back in later.

I shall try and get to NYC somewhat early in the day on Friday. I was going to go to the booksigning the night before, but it doesn't make sense to come in and go back home only to come back again the next morning.

I've talked to Jeeney on the phone and she's looking forward to going to the show. I'll have more of a definite arrival time later in the week.

I can't wait......

Alas, it looks like I'll be going solo. Mr. KarenSews (aka Ned) is and has been very busy with the clean-up of the Quaker Oats plant in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Add to that all the work we are doing to get our house on the market...

He'll be missed. There's no way I'll miss it, though!

karen, tickling is my downfall too. i have 4 advanced black belts but if someone even comes close to tickling me, i'm done for. once was tickled till i stopped breathing, not fun, now it's the only time you can get me ( unless you ask) to run around and scream like a girl. i start laughing even before i'm touched. i'd say i'll protect you but i just can't promise that
