I hadn't realized that syphilis was a relatively modern disease, to the Europeans, anyway. I thought they were the ones who brought it here...and maybe they did to the north American Indians, having contracted it from the southern tribes. I believe syphilis was Columbus' gift to Europe. In exchange, Europeans gave Native Americans smallpox and tuberculosis. They trumped that with tobacco. So all in all, I think it was a stalemate.
