I hadn't realized that syphilis was a relatively modern disease, to the Europeans, anyway. I thought they were the ones who brought it here...and maybe they did to the north American Indians, having contracted it from the southern tribes. It was as horrible then as AIDS is now...a terrible debilitating disease. Interesting and informative articles, Dee.

I believe syphilis was Columbus' gift to Europe. In exchange, Europeans gave Native Americans smallpox and tuberculosis. They trumped that with tobacco. So all in all, I think it was a stalemate.
Actually, measles might have been even more deadly to the native Americans!
