Firstly.......Beautyful pictures of the Northern Lights. Really like the one on page 2 taken in Salluit, Nunavik in Quebec. Yes these are real Polarbears, only........made of ice.

Secondly.....There is going to be a heck of a lot to see for those who can see The Northern Lights in the sky over the next two days according to pictuers of a solar flare from the Japanese satelite Hinode, as one can see here http://spaceweather.com/archive.php?month=01&day=13&year=2008&view=view and here http://solarb.msfc.nasa.gov/

Enjoy, I will be staying up tonight if the sky clears, doesnt look like it though:mad:

I love light shows like the Aurora Borealis. It seems the further north you go, the more likely it is to happen. Thank you SO much for sharing these Gisli.... I have never yet been lucky enough to see them. I hope I will soon

Should be very clear here tonight (and damned cold!). Just might have to go have a look, somewhere out away from the city lights (which is not difficult in a "city" of 4000).

Anyone planning to try to get a photo--plan on an exposure of several minutes, so your digital probably won't be able to do it. You'll end up with different colors depending on the type of film you use--Kodachrome produces a bluish white, while Ektachrome yields a more purplush shade. Something like Vericolor L (designed for long exposures) or Kodak's film for astronomical photography (can't remember the name and I'll bet your neighborhood photo store doesn't have it anyway) might well produce more "accurate" results and some variation in colors.

Unless you have stray light sources in your frame it's almost impossible to overexpose a shot of the aurora borealis.

I saw the Aurora Borealis once in the far north of Finland- absolutely spectacular!
