News: Adaware Se Will No Longer Update On Windows 98 And Me Versions
Do you have adaware SE as one of your protection programs? You may not know this but, as from today (Jan 2008)you will find it unsupported Adaware SE no longer supports win 98 ?
and adaware 2007
is NOT compatible with Win 98se nor Win ME either. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif
----- added later -----
It should be noted that the program -will- still operate..... using the last downloaded definitions. It will -not- be able to download -new- updates -to- those definitions.

Ever since Lavasoft decided not to keep updating their Ad-Aware that works with older versions on Windoze I've been looking for a -free- alternative and I believe I found it. I've known about it for some time but never used it because I was quite happy with Ad-Aware. The alternative is "Spyware Terminator". It works with older versions of Windoze and it's continually updated. It takes a bit longer but it seems to dig deeper / scrub harder and it finds the same stuff. It does not detect your usage tracks but that's not nearly as important as the nasty stuff. Another important thing is that it uses the "ClamWin" open source (free but excellent) antivirus program,... and THAT is one of the reasons that it takes longer. Ad-Aware doesn't use any antivirus detection and therefore doesn't scan for viruses with speed being the result.
It might take a bit to get used to because it's different than what you may be accustomed to but it can be found here completely free at this link:
http://www.spywareterminator.com/
There's also the Arovax Antispyware which appears to be an excellent choice as well at:
http://www.arovaxantispyware.com/
Of course there's always the tried and true Spybot Search & Destroy if you want to wait a lot longer. It takes a while but it does a -really- good job. It's available at:

I still swear by Spybot Search and Destroy.. it is slow as hell, but i'll second Pauls vote that it does a good job.

I used to run Ad-Aware every day and then on Sunday I'd Spybot. Spybot found things that Ad-Aware didn't. -Usually- there wasn't anything major to be found by either one but I remember one time when Spybot found a potentially major trojan that Ad-Aware completely missed. I'll be checking this Spyware Terminator against it just to make sure but so far it looks pretty good. It seems to be a good alternative. It's about half-again slower than Ad-Aware (and more resource hungry) but far faster than Spybot. We shall see what we shall see. If nothing else it's like I said, Spybot is tried and true. I believe that Janis herself uses Spybot if I remember correctly.
Just upgraded Spybot to version 1.5. After my computer crash a couple of weeks ago I hadn't reinstalled the older version that I had yet. I already use Adaware and AVG and like Paularoid would only run SB weekly, but you can never have too many protector programs.

<snipped> but you can never have too many protector programs.
But don't run -all- of them at once. It's good to have what's called a multilayered defense but don't run all of them at the same time or you'll needlessly bog down your system.

Now why would anyone do that?

It would be like running two air-conditioners in your car at the same time. Yeah it'd be cool alright but the thing would be sucking up so much gas and it would go so slow (resource hog) that you'd have been better off walking.

I am running AdAware on Windows XP and haven't been able to get updates to download since around the first of the year. Is there a new version that has to be downloaded or is my computer just being weird again?

If you're running anything earlier than the current 2007 or later version then that was/is exactly what I was talking about. Anything earlier than that will still run under the latest December '07 update for it but it can't be updated to any newer definitions than that. If you're running the later versions then I don't have a clue unless for some odd reason they haven't issued an update since then. I find that hard to believe though because they're usually pretty judicious about providing new definitions for it on a weekly basis, or at least they have been in the past. The FAQ on it is here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/faq_aawse.php
If all else fails, get Spybot S&D and be done with the worries altogether other than the extra time committed to the running of the slower program. You can also run "Spyware Terminator" that is just as good in my opinion. It is available here: http://www.spywareterminator.com/

Got the update and that took care of it. I have both AdAware and SpyBot S & D--each seems to catch things that the other misses. I run each every few days (one at a time)--generally put one or the other on when I'm going to be away from the computer for awhile.

And THAT is the way it's done. ;)
