OK, so maybe the last poem I posted was a bit gruesome, but that was the nature of the subject matter.
How 'bout this one?
What Do Barnacled Goslings Know?
Maybe only one thing.
But it's enough.
Three days after coming into this world
they must take a journey,
leave their nests high on Artic rock cliffs
where no predator can reach.
Their parents squawk encouragement,
then fly to the cliff base
where food waits.
Too young for flight, the babies jump,
their thick fluff the only protection.
Half survive the plunge.
But, they don't care about odds.
It's time to leave.
Turning loose,
they begin to fall...
