I've been having a great time in the Bay Area since last week, but coming to visit with Dar and Peggy is a great end to my visit. Peggy is under the weather, so a visit to the doc today will get her on the mend.

I'm really tired, and I think I'll fill you in on all the details (and menus!) after I get home.

I'll just leave you with this little tidbit:
I saw Dar in a dress! And not just any dress - an evening dress! She looked terrific! Except for the shoes. More later! hee hee!

That's it--someone got Dar drunk and dressed her up. I once helped haul a guy to detox who had had that happen. For the record, he was not nearly as good-looking as Dar.

I did not get pics. BUT, I think some of Dar and Peggy's friends did. Dar was talking about this dress that she was going to wear to Peggy's nephew's wedding, and said she wanted my advice on the length. One thing led to another, and a mass request to "model" was made. Dar left, and returned looking gorgeous in her black/sparkly dress/jacket ensemble - complete with stockings and pumps!! The concensus was made that it, indeed, needed to be shortened to show off her great legs. I was not going to say anything about the shoes, then one of the boys said, "And HONEY, LOSE those shoes!" Then someone else piped up that they were very "Italian-mother-of-the-groom." (or grandmother! ;) ) It was decided that the "straight woman" would take her shopping for shoes. (uh, that would be me) Before the night was over, one of the guys said he had some "black, strappy" shoes in her size that would work. I guess Dar didn't hear the "strappy" part, because when I told her she'd have to go with out stockings, AND get a pedicure, she balked.

The next day, we were in San Francisco, and went to DSW Shoe Warehouse. We found some very cut, very trendy, not-too-high heels, but I kept looking for the sale/clearance racks. We have lots of them at our DSW. We saw nothing indicating that, so she was going to buy the cute shoes. At the register, I commented to the cashier that ours had sale racks. He said, "Oh, clearance? Downstairs." No wonder we couldn't see it. It was a sign about 5" x 18" above a stairwell. We made a beeline for it. "Hold those shoes," we told Chris. BINGO!!! Racks and racks of clearance shoes!!! Eva, you would have been on the FLOOR!!! I was at one end of Dar's size, she was at the other. Another woman got into our conversation and was asking Dar's fashion advice. When Dar was complaining about having a pedicure and not wearing stockings with open-toed shoes, the woman was behind me, nodding in agreement with me. Dar had decided she would NOT wear open toes. Final - end of story. UNTIL she said to me, "Hey, how are these?" WOW! Beautiful! Stunning! Classy! A matte satin peek-a-boo toe with a little bit of black sparkle on the criss-cross over the toes. Lovely. Dar did take pics of the shoes. Eva, we thought of you all that time!

Oh yeah, the girls in Dar's office confirmed the no-stockings-get-a-pedicure "rule." Dar, sweetie, do I need to come to Chicago and paint your toenails for ya for the wedding??

And this doesn't even touch the make-up adventure!! :p

*roaring with laughter* I would have loved to been there. Especially for the shoeshoppingpart, as you understand. Pictures! Pictures! I want to see the entire ensemble WITH the gorgious shoes.

And Dar... if you really don't want to wear open shoes: constructionboots (polished!!) look good with everything. Especially if one is a dyke ;)

I'm dying here! Dar, you are truly a Brave Woman! Just pretend it's Halloween and you're in the best looking costume you can get! That way it will be fun and bearable, too. Lucky you have Karen there for guidance.
We really do want pics to hang on our lockers!

She actually has 2 outfits, and we were treated to 1 1/2 of them! No - it's not what you think. She put on the top to the other one with her jeans. It was stunning on her! All sparkly and it fits her perfectly! OOOO LA LAAAA!

Eva, the dress she showed us really isn't conducive to construction boots.

Bless her heart, Dar suffered through all 4 floors of Britex Fabrics with me! Mixty, you would love it! When her eyes were beginning to glaze over, I led her out of there!

Fashion was not the only topic of my visit. There was, of course, food!

At the party, there were appetizers made by Dar and brought by friends. They were delicious! My fave was the brie in phyllo with apricot preserves and cashews. Thanks, Dar!! A unanimous hit was when Dar passed a large tin of Ghiradelli's Peppermint Bark! YUM!

For breakfast on Monday, the 3 of us went to La Note, a tiny restaurant that has some amazing breakfast fare. I had the lemon gingerbread pancakes with poached pears. Peggy had French toast made with cinnamon brioche, and dar, a ham and cheese omelet with some kind of delicious cheese, but I don't remember what kind.

Dar and I made it through the day with just latte and and a small snack. Peggy met up with us for dinner at a Thai restaurant where forks were flying over the entrees that we shared after the chicken satay appetizer. We had spicy crab noodles, prawns with ginger, mango, and other yummy stuff, and salmon with a lime and cilantro sauce. I tell ya, those girls know the good places to eat!!!

Since we didn't go there for dinner, a stop a Fenton's (ice cream) was demanded before we went home. I had peppermint (what THEY call a little scoop!) with hot fudge. It made a lovely pink, brown and white (of course there was whipped cream!) volcano as it overflowed the little sundae dish, onto the plate! Dar had pumpkin pie ice cream with hot caramel. I would have gone with the nuts on that one, but Dar doesn't "do nuts." I'm not touching that one! ;)

Dar, it's ok, you can come out now...you are a good woman volunteering to wear a dress to your nephew's wedding. i give you huge props! and the shoes and all, dang girl, you have class. the things we do for the ones we love. i was in my youngest sister's wedding 3 and a half years ago and i had to do the whole dress and shoes thing too. i actually picked out the dresses we ( the brides maids ) would wear AND for my mom and my sister i covered all of my tattoo's and did the make up thing. just one word of warning...wear the shoes for an hour or so in the next few days... you don;t want to have hurting feet ( I made that mistake, the shoes were lovely, but within 30 mins my feet were killing me ) from what it sounds like, you are one hot lesbo! woooo hoooo! if ya got it...;) peggy must be very proud :)
once again, huge props Dar!

Ah, there is always more to be said about shoes... :D

Good advice, Hoops! Also, when you are wearing your shoes without stockings, you might want to put patches on your feet on the critical places before you put them on. This to reduce your chances that the shoes will hurt on your feet, your heel or the place where the straps go around your legs. If you need to stand a lot in them or walk then buy 'Happy Feet' or 'Party Feet'. These are sillicone patches which you can put in the shoes so you'll have a cushiony part under your feet. You'll last longer with these. There are several variations for different places in the shoes. For instance look at the section with the picture of the red shoes. http://stores.ebay.com/Softcare-Silicone-UK-Outlet_Foot-Care_W0QQcolZ2QQdirZQ2d1QQfsubZ3QQftidZ2QQlnsZ2QQt Zkm

Dar, if all else fails, I recommend you wear your shoes the femme-way...
1. Drive to the party by car in different, more comfortable shoes
2. Only when you have parked the car change into your partyshoes
3. Make a grand entrance wearing your partyshoes. Give everybody the opportunity to ooo and aaa over them
4. Kick the shoes off under the dinnertable
5. Let other people fetch you drinks
6. Put them on for photo-opportunities only
7. Take them off again for dancing. You can do that barefeet. Advantage is that it looks sexy and wild too
8. Put them on again when you leave allowing everyone to ooo and aaa again over your courage to wear shoes like this
9. Change shoes in the car
10. Soak your feet in soothing water, let Peggy massage them and complain for a week about how much they hurt

Whatever you do: don't show people the comfy shoes. They have to be under the impression that you are wearing these gorgious femmy heels all the time. If they see you barefoot they will be very understanding.

Warning: if you have to wear your shoes to the extent that your feet will actually swell up and start hurting (for instance if there is walking involved between locations) then don't take them off and put them on later again! It will only hurt more and it's difficult to put them on again. Keep them on and simply refuse to walk.

Good luck!

Eva, funny you should mention driving there in comfy shoes! When I first mentioned not wearing stockings, Dar was aghast! "WHAT??? But it's CHICAG
O, in DECEMBER! You mean go BARE-LEGGED??" Peggy had the same reaction when Dar told her. I envision Dar going to the wedding in her dress, wearing snowpants and galoshes, like we did when I was a kid. We could not wear pants to school, so we'd wear our "leggin's" under our dresses to walk to school. Of course, we had to take them off as soon as we got to school.

Eva, the dress she showed us really isn't conducive to construction boots.
I don't agree. Constructionboots are something like the dyke version of the 'little black dress'. They can be worn on every occasion and they always look good.

Eva ;)

Y'know....in addition to having two pairs of Birkenstocks, I also have two pairs of construction boots. Well, one pair of construction boots and one pair of Army boots (which, by the way, I highly recommend for motorcycle wear--you can get a brand-new steel-toed pair for around $15 if you look and they'll protect you from anything!).

I know Eva has made her thoughts abundantly clear on the subject, but is it somehow remotely possible that I COULD be a lesbian after all?

Although your shoecollection is very convincing, you can not be a lesbian. You are a man. I am sorry, Dave.

Lesbian
In
Man's
Body

This is a term that Peggy and I coined for extra sweet men who know how to treat women, especially their 'own' with respect and love. I suspect that there are a whole bunch of straight men on this board who would qualify, although the fact that you own birkenstocks and flannel shirts gives you an extra edge. ;)

Dar

Yes, it's true, I actually DO put on a dress from time to time, usually only under extreme duress, like for a company party or wedding.
I actually do find it fun, as long as it's done sparingly and only a couple times a year at maximum.

I am NOT a shoe person at all. I have big giant feet size 10-11, which for you across the pond translates to about a 43-44, so dainty is not appropriate for my gunboats. And since I only get girly dressy very rarely, I have WHAT I THOUGHT was a perfectly acceptable pair of plain black pumps.
They are black leather, couple inch heel, simple shoes, in what I THOUGHT was a timeless fashion. Well, according to my friends HMMPH and I use the term loosely, especially by male friends who like to play at drag from time to time, they are NOT acceptable. GEESH! Like I want to spend my money on friggin' once a year shoes? Well, as Karen (the snitch) told you, I succumbed to peer pressure and bought another pair, they actually are pretty cute and HOPEFULLY these will be acceptable to wear for the next few parties and weddings. Eva thanks for your advice about practicing wearing them, that's excellent advice, I would not have thought of it. Peggy is going to crack up watching me walk around the house wearing my high heels. Hmmmm, but come to think of it, if that's all I'm wearing maybe she will find something to do besides laugh. heehee oops did I say that out loud. :o I will absolutely be wearing comfy shoes (probably boots since it's Chicago in December) and making my entrance in my fancy shoes. I will not however be going without hose. Karen called me to tell me about some hose that has opened toes...but I think I want my toes covered. Unless I decide to get a pedicure BWAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

I even am considering some makeup....just eyeshadow and maybe some lipstick. Karen gave me some pointers. I put some on and had to crack up because when I looked in the mirror my mother was looking back.

I'll post some pictures at some point, I promise.

Hey Dar, did Karen measure you up for that little skirt you are obliged to wear at the picnic?

Dar
12-06-2007, 09:00 PM
Okay let's see, going down Karen's previous post.

yes I suffered through Britex, not so bad, other than I was getting sniffly from the dust and didn't have any allergy drugs. My eyes were definitely glazing over, especially when Karen got going with the shop ladies about different fabrics and stuff. I comforted myself by knowing that her eyes would have been equally glazed in a bike shop. We all have our strengths![

It was very fun to have Karen at our annual Solstice Party, early this year because a bunch of the group is traveling for the holidays. It's always the same 14 friends, with an occassional out of town guest. The brie was a big hit, but note to self, the Kilo size was way way WAY too much.
The Peppermint Bark was from Trader Joe's, not Ghirardelli, but I suspect they taste the same. yummy indeed!!

Oh and Karen was a big help getting the house ready for the party. We boogied to Janis while we cleaned. Even Peggy sang along.

Karen the cheese in my omelette was Emmenthal, a sort of swiss cheese I think.
The Thai leftovers were fantastic by the way! Love those crab noodles!

We had to go to Fenton's, it's my newest visiting Rudie tradition, and really I like to make any excuse to go there. I do like nuts, just by themselves not IN stuff. Pumpkin ice cream with hot caramel sauce <sigh>

DaveM
12-06-2007, 09:53 PM
Whew....I am honored. Thank you.

Dar....my shoe size is 10 1/2....perhaps we can swap shoes sometime?

Eva
12-07-2007, 06:25 AM
Dar, I feel for you. See it as drag and put down a grand performance. Maybe that helps. And the timeless pumps... Ehm... yes... well, I am afraid I have to agree with your friends here.

More pointers for wearing heels: you need a different way to walk. Because if you walk the same way in your heels as in your boots.... Well, everybody will be convinced you are a guy in drag. Sooooo...

Take small steps
Wiggle your butt* with every step in the direction of the leg you have just taken the step with
Don't worry if it feels like you are overdoing it. You're just not used to it
Move from your hips. Not your upperbody.
Think ballerina, not constructionworker

*Explanation: Have you ever seen how a horse rocks it's behind with every step? Imagine you are on it's back and you are moving your own butt in pace with the horse. That's how you walk on heels. Yes, even the most elegant models walk 'horselike' in my eyes.

Practice at home wearing nothing else. I guarantee you that you and Peggy will have big fun with it :D About the hose: how about hold-ups? Practical and regarded as sexy by other people.

Good luck!
