The United Nations has voted Iceland the most livable country in the world. Second, Norway, third Australia. Congratulations Icelanders. This was achieved for your free education and medicine, and I have forgotten the other thing. Not bad for a country with a population of around 300,000 people. :)

Very enjoyable read http://www.abs.gov.au/AUSSTATS/abs@.nsf/Latestproducts/4228.0Media%20Release12006?opendocument&tabname=Summary&prodno=4228.0&issue=2006&num=&view=
I think a lot of things matter when you measure what makes a nation good nation, a supportive wellfare care is one, enough jobs is another and mostly I find free healthcare and education matters high in my books.

Ohh lucille we are so lucky......the perfect "us" countries:)

Ps canīt help noticing this:

There are fewer Australians with literacy assessed as being in the lowest category than there were a decade ago,

The last goverment must have done something right:o ...........sorry but my rascal genes are dominent in me and always take over when least expected:p

Well it would have itīs advantages speaking Icelandic, but learning the language is quite easy. We have two ways to teach you.

1) To understand Icelandic.....have three shots of our Icelandic Schnapps.

and......

(For those who donīt drink)
2) To understand Icelandic......have a bottle of Icelandic Schnapps and let the Icelander drink three shots.

Take your pick:D

The United Nations has voted Iceland the most livable country in the world. Second, Norway, third Australia.

And I'm pleased to say that fourth place went to Canada (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ca.html). http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k267/deemark/Emoticons/smile.jpg

"Iceland knocked off Norway to top this year’s list of most desirable countries to live in according to an annual report published by the U.N.

Taking in factors that include life expectancy, education levels and real per capita income, the index used figures from 2005 to place Iceland number one.

Norway was knocked out of the top spot for the first time in six years and landed at number two on the list, followed by Australia, Canada and Ireland."

Will take the welfare and do business off the books if possible. I really don't need much but hate giving the government any of what I do manage to earn.

I have a complete set of Janis' CDs more or less but those will arrive with me....wouldn't want them held for ransom.

I do have duplicates of many which will be distributed to anyone who helps me find a place to live, etc.

Will Iceland actually accept an honorary lesbian? Will there be any immigration problems? Hopefully someone will sponsor me or whatever it required.

Hmmm sounds to me that you allready are an Icelander:o

Books and writers do well here, an avarage houshold owes well over 2000 books, nature books, autobiograpies, short stories and poetry are the most popular ones.

There are around 1000 books published a year so you will have some competition.......but just say you have never been in a more beautyful country, say that nature is unique, the people beautyful and mention also the clean air and our hospitality.....then you will do well and get a lot of attention from the press.

There is a copy on the loose of a book called Explorations in the Ordinary by David R. Moffat that I am afraid I want see again for the person I lended it to lended it to another who lended to another, and soforth. For that to happen to a book is always a good sign in this part of the world. I recall one saying the book was a poetic tale of mystic secrets from nature.......so if you can write books like that you might do ok I think.

No immigration problem with the honorary lesbian, they let Elton John in....soooo.

Now letīs talk cost of food in the grocery store so you will be prepered, all in us dollars:
Bread..................4.50
Milk.....................1.50
Grapes, fruits 1 kg..10
Meat, lamb 1kg......20
Fish 1 kg..............16
12 eggs................4
Coca cola 1/2 liter....3

cd.....................35
book, hardcover...40-160
Diesel 1 liter........2.20
Petrol................2

Rent per month for a 2 room apartment......2100
....and I am talking cheap stuff here.

Avarage salery per month.........around 3500-4500
Wellfare per month..................1500

Still intrested.

Well done Dee. Obviously the lands settled by the celts and Ireland itself makes life worth living. We are a great bunch of people. ;)

However, a Rudieland in Iceland sounds great - particularly at my age - I need to live in a welfare state. :D Though I think our new government will bring in some great changes.

For Dave. The new government is dropping the department of homeland security. :D

Gisli that is indeed my book (my second)! If you want another copy I should be able to get one for you.....it is technically still in print, though the publisher has other ideas, sometimes.

If you would like one of the rare unsigned copies just look up northstarpress.com online and I'm sure they will be happy to sell you one or the entire contents of the warehouse as you may prefer.

Have always had mixed feelings about that book....the cover is nice but they took my color photos for the inside and turned them into mediocre black and white images. And they changed the ending of two stories. Such is the way of the world, I suppose, but when one's creation has been raped, it is difficult not to mourn.

As to the Icelandic Opportunity....I think I just might be on the next plane. Mind, my personal library will take somewhat longer to ship and I do hope someone will pack it properly. I believe I have the requisite 2000 books and probably more....a certain number are rare and antiquarian volumes. Will they be welcome on Icelandic soil?

Ah Lucille...you almost make me feel comfortable and I thank you. I cannot think of things like as "department of homeland security" without being all too well reminded of nations that have organized such things for seriously unsavory purposes. I walked throught Auschwitz 15 years ago....I don't ever want to take that walk again.

Have another copy but bought in Amazon....does that matter???? it is the same book??? I have it beside signed books by Jack Veasey and Michael E. Lloyd. And they are beside Halldor Laxness..some icelandic author. When you come to Iceland, could you sign the book for me.....would like a signed copy.

If I have something signed it does not go away, for one, it has my name on it...... and I enjoy to brag about owing a signed copy.

Alternative endings????? I can believe that it must have been a bit difficult to take, still a good book though.

Uhhh am I going off topic here:confused:

Ummm....Gisli? I can bring you a copy of the book and also a virtually unobtainable copy of my first book....provided that will get me into Iceland. A very large library will also accompany me, and a fair amount of warm clothing. Come to think of it, I have at least one sweater that was made in Iceland....will I have to pay tax on reimporting it?
