View Full Version : Janis update - Thursday night

Our girl saw her neurosurgeon today (a full week before she was supposed to originally - I'm not sure why it worked out that way, but it was for the best!).
The doctor was totally pleased with her x-rays (yes, she faxed a copy to me, yuck!! now her upper spine and a plate with two screws in it are indelibly engraved on my mind...!) and her progress. So pleased, in fact, that he allowed her to begin Range Of Motion physical therapy right away, and resume light weight-lifting exercises!!

Anna, Janis has been doing a lot of alternative medicine work. She and her dear friend Anne McCaffrey correspond continuously about flower essences, hands-on healing, etc etc. She worked closely with a local hypnotherapist for weeks before the surgery, using guided imagery and re-affirming that the surgery would go well, there'd be little pain, her voice would be better than ever and the like.

She also works closely with a chiropracter and two PT's - one specializing in musicians and ROM work, one doing a lot more cranio-sacral, "healing hands," working with her cerebrospinal fluid etc. I don't think there's anything Janis herself discounts when it comes to health. Just this afternoon, as she was telling me about her PT today, she said something like "You know, our bodies get it; we just get in the way sometimes...."

She said to me once, when I was raving about something, "Judy, you can't discount anything. Not anything. There's just too much we don't know." And if you think about it - burst intestine, liver surgery, this surgery - she's really come through like a trouper, in large part I think because she doesn't discount anything.

I must admit, Janis has been true to her word and taken it easy. Her friend Cyndi continued to drive her - to the x-rays, to the neuro-surgeon, to lunch with Pat. Janis took a big nap after that, then drove herself to PT (with her surgeon's blessing, since it was only 1 1/2 miles away.) Then she took a two mile walk, went home, and met up with Pat, who took her to California Pizza Kitchen to celebrate the great test results. She's been trying to walk at least two miles each day, since she hasn't been allowed to do any other sort of exercise.

We were all a little concerned because whenever she's tried to turn her head to the side, particularly to the right, it's spasmed out. (Pat says she does kind of look like a bobble-head at those moments.) But the neuro-surgeon wasn't phased, and her physical therapist explained that the "dark meat" muscles had gone into hiding, while the "white meat" muscles were carrying too heavy a load. Everyone promises it's normal, and will only last another month or two.

After today's session with the PT, she's got 2 PT exercises plus 3 weight lifting (1 lb., no more) to do, and she seems to be feeling a bit more in control and much better about everything. She turned in her autobiography ms. a few weeks ago, and her editor formally accepted it. The editor sent two pages of editorial comments, which apparently is really very little for a first book. Working title is "Between the Lines," BTW.

(Of course - and I'm not supposed to know this - she's also been a little down because she regarded her convalescence time as "free work time," and expected to finish two novelettes and a young adult novel over the two months... what an idiot! We'll see. I reminded her when we spoke that Mike Resnick is expecting to co-write a novel with her next year, and it's not like she'll be touring 7 days a week, month after month. There'll be time for writing.)

On another note, I don't think anyone's mentioned that Janis smoked her last cigarette just before the surgery?! She used a book by Allen Carr (I'm not sure I'm spelling that right) that her friends Cathy and Celia had used; read it right up to leaving that morning for surgery. She says once in a while she misses it, but each time she thinks of lighting a cigarette, she also thinks "If I light one cigarette, it'll cost me $93,000 over the rest of my life, because I'll get addicted again." We don't know if it'll last, but we're all very proud of her!!!!!

The happiest part is that while she still has to wear the neck brace when she sleeps, or in the car or doing brisk walking, she can take it off the rest of the time. Since she's going on vacation from Nov. 16-Dec 1, this is really great.

That's about it. "Our girl" is doing as well as can be expected, much much better than most in her position. I'll be seeing her and Pat when we meet up for vacation Nov. 16 - it's their yearly treat to me, including me for that first week! I'll give you all a report on what she looks like, moves like, acts like then!!!!

As Janis herself would say, thanks to all of you for your support, and your kind remarks!!!

That is all very heartening news, and thanks for the update, JudyR!
Delighted to hear J is doing so well, but she is essentially healthy and in very good shape, strong, so should recover apace with very little effort on her part...overdoing is not a good idea, nor the old too-much-too-soon trick; but exercise is essential to keep those muscles toned and healing the way they should. I think they've learned a lot from sports injury medicine, and it sounds like she has a wonderful doctor!
Continuing to wish her well and back to her new self in good time! Have a great time when you all get together again!
Hugs all around, '
Bat;)

Good to hear that it is a good report from the Doc. Good to know also that the neck (inside and out) will benefit from a rest from smoking. :D I hope the right elbow still has the strength to lift an occasional single malt to the lips.

Thank you Judy, Fabulous news, and a fine update I might add.
I'm not surprised with her choice of alternative....surely she wouldn't dive into anything without the proper info. and there's much to be said about the benefits it has to offer.(cranio-sacral is amazing) ;)
Janis, just keep going strong...there isn't anyone here that would expect less!
{HUGS} PROUD OF YOU!

Thanks again for keeping us up to date, Judy! Really sweet of you.

I'm glad to hear Janis is doing so well. And alternative medicine.. I'm all for getting as little chemical stuff in our bodies as we possibly can! Janis said it as eloquently as ever: our bodies get it, we just in the way sometimes. :)

Enjoy your vacation, girls!

If something works, why not stick with it? There seems to be no "scientific" evidence that acupuncture works--yet I've known a number of people who have gotten incredible results from it for a variety of ailments. How their cures came about no one knows....the point is that these folks are cured.

I had a major prejudice about chiropractors for ages. In late 1993 I injured my back and the opinion of three doctors was that I'd have to get used to taking painkillers and walking around leaned to the right a bit for the foreseeable future. Never thought of trying a chiropractor but when a fellow offered a series of treatments at no charge I figured I had nothing to lose. During the fourth treatment he gave my spine an agonizing shove and I squirmed around in agony for a couple of minutes. After which I got up and my back was in working order again. As it has remained since, whereas I used to throw it out about one a year.

Have tried to keep an open mind since.

Mighty glad you are much the same as far as such things are concerned, Janis. And I congratulate you on parting company with tobacco. Do you like sunflower seeds? They have an enzyme in them which deals with cravings nicely and as a nice added effect, has a subtle "balancing" effect on the body. Worked for me--I haven't smoked since September 21st, 1985. Well, there was the Nicorette gum and the girlfriend who hated cigarettes, but the sunflowers seeds really helped. Honestly.

Hmm, Between the Lines eh? Well that makes perfect sense. http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k267/deemark/Emoticons/biggrin.jpg

Wow! No smoking? That's huge! (Plus, not smoking surely advances the body's ability to heal.) So grand cheers to Janis for that.
Terrific news all around.
Again, thanks for the update, Judy...and good on you for getting a vacation for yourself next week.

Judy, That's great news! Thanks for your ongoing updates. Glad Janis is also giving her lungs a break with not smoking. I know it's very tough...because I smoke and I know how tough it can be.

Thanks Again!

Judy: Thank you SO much for the terrific update and for going into such great detail. 'Cause you know we all want to know as much as you can share with us. SO happy that Janis is recovering well and the news about stopping cigarettes is incredible. I hope she is able to stick with that...I know it isn't easy but so VERY worth it. I think it will help her recovery that much more.

Hugs and Love to Janis!

Marcia :)

Thank you for this fine update, Judy!!

And I think "Between The Lines" is the perfect title! But then I would, wouldn't I ... :)

Please tell madam she's not allowed to change that plan!

Judyr,
thank you for the update. i'm so happy for Janis and all her good news. I'm the kind who will give every option of healing a chance and it has served me well most of the time. most hospitals offer alternative medicine along with conventional medicine, like last time i was in, i had massage and reiki (spelling?) and nutrional counseling and others. take advantage of it all insurance are even beginning to cover more and more alternative services which is really cool. I figure most of these things have been around longer than the science we know today so they must have something to offer. so happy to hear about the smoking thing, i'm lucky enough never to have taken on that habit, so i have no idea what it is like to give it up. anyway, i'm still sending thoughts and prayers to all of you, thank you again Judyr

This is an awesome update. Hey maybe Janis will post a copy of her x-rays or auction it off to highest bidder??? And I can't begin to tell Janishow proud I am of her quitting smoking. You go girl! And if you fall off the horse, get right back on. I hear there's always the "Mad Russian" in Boston.

Love your posts and updates Judy-sure do like having you around more.

Will the bobbleheads have a scar or visible artificial disk? I'd buy one.

i wonder if anyone has tried the magnets, for quitting smoking... i know accupressure helps curb cravings, and they work on that principal. i just thought, there are no chemicals involved, it can't hurt to try.
