I'm reading Marianne Faithfull's new book, Memories Dreams and Reflections, and was thrilled to read a mention of Janis Ian.
Marianne was discussing her album from 1972, Rich Kid Blues (which I consider a classic and she was talking about singer songwriters who were successfull at the time including Janis Ian and Melanie.
Here are links to the book and album:

I went to see her with Janis and Pat when she came through Nashville once, and I remember Janis saying she'd been in the UK doing a "desert island" show (where she had to pick 10 CD's she'd take with her to a desert island.) Faithful's "Broken English" was close to the top of her list. The interviewer laughed and said Marianne Faithful had done the show a few weeks before, and Janis' "Between the Lines" was near the top of HER list!

I read a book a few years ago by the same title, I believe, but it was an autobiography of Carl Jung. I would have thought that copyright laws would have prevented such duplication of titles. Interesting.
It is interesting to see where people's lives and career paths have taken them.
In 1972, Janis Ian, Carole King and Melanie, were probably the three biggest names as singer songwriters. Of course Joni was always there, but her name recognition probably didn;t really hit until 74 with Court and Spark.
Today:
Janis still writes incredible songs and tours the "progressive folk circuit." lots of great intimate venues and is completely assessable to her fans.
Carole has been very political elections and environmental, and has taken her Living Room Tour to the large stage, making it as intimate as possible for a large arena. A warm and wonderful presence. Although, her great song writing are mostly behind her. (I although, I love everything she does). She has alway kept strong bounderies between her work and her life.
Melanie seems to tour in Europe mostly and is off of the American radar screen.
