View Full Version : I've been accused of racism ........

yesterday I posted a link on a UK gay site to a sketch by French comedian Muriel Robin. The sketch is hillarious and very well written, and Muriel portrays a woman whose daughter is about to marry a (horror) black man. The whole point of the sketch is the ignorance of the mother: "he's black? but do his parents know? are they sure??"
I then received a few emails accusing me of posting racist material.
When I responded they then accused me of not understanding the nuances and hidden meanings in the sketch. I am almost bilingual English/French and understood everything in that sketch, which I'm posting a link to below for any French speakers.
As someone for whom Society's Child means so much, to be accused of racism is a big insult.
Muriel Robin is gay and a big campaigner against racism and homophobia.

As I mentioned earlier David, the clueless are roaming the earth, and somehow they manage to get online. I suppose they’d be out to lynch our Janis too if they heard Society’s Child.
Idiots.

...arghhhh talk about overprotective and oversensetive people. Well it could be worse, they could have accused you to be a homophobic............

Chalk it up to another encounter with the clueless. And remember always what Friedrich Schiller wrote: "with stupidity the gods themselves struggle in vain".

I wish I spoke French or she was speaking in English. It sounds like everyone is having great time.
Dave there are a lot ignorant people who are so oversensitive and they are really very lost!

daviduk,
too many message boards aren't as open (is that the right word?) as this one is. we are open enough to know you better than to think for an instant that you have racist thoughts about anyone. why people would say such a thing about you or this body of work is beyond me.

Oh, what do they know about you. Screw them, dear David. (Or rather... don't!)

David UK, I hope those emails were halfway polite. At least people are paying attention!

She's very funny, David. Why are people so intransigent and not of a liberal mind???? One should take life as one finds it and adapt to accommodate the most unusual of circumstances. I can think of someone else I'd like to string up by the heels for the same reason.

... oh yes, and there's no need to leave the house to verify what you said... just turn on the radio, tv, go online or simply watch out of your window...

David, there will always be those people who are just looking for an excuse to be offended.
While i've never met you face to face, i have no doubt as to your character. Don't let it get you down.

There are times when it seems best to follow Drew Carey's advice and simply tell people: "Ok, so you're offended. Fine! BE offended! And then shut the f*ck up!"
Yah that, or, "I'm even more offended than you are that you're even offended!"
This here internet thing gots all kinds of nuts. :p
You know who you are, David. Try not to let the bozos bring you down.
Nincs mit, David! By the way, to get an o with umlaut you need alt 148 with Windows. I am still looking for the combination on a Mac...There has to be a way to switch languages or something... *makes thinking noises*
I wish it were as easy as what I said sounded. Sometimes one is just very upset. Big hug.

This is reminiscent of those misguided sorts who wanted 'Huckleberry Finn' removed from library shelves, claiming that it was racist because it contained the word 'nigger.' I reckon you're in in good company with Mark Twain.
Something of the same sort is going on in Florida right now, with certain people trying to have 'Old Folks at Home' abolished as our state song because the original Foster lyrics included 'darkie,' not that anyone sings it that way anymore. Some politicians have jumped on the train and even had a contest for a new song to replace it. Needless to say, none of them are anywhere in the league of 'Old Folks.'

not really my point Stephen... I would never ever use the n***** word about a person of another colour, and am shocked at the terms my parents used about black people seemingly innocently all those years ago. Any songs which contain such words should either be rewritten or deleted.
I posted something which was profoundly ANTI racist and it was that fact which made the accusation all the worst.

Minnesota has a state song, which was adopted in the early 1900s and is so boring that everyone promptly forgot about it. Not until the mid-80s did a copy surface in the Minnesota Historical Society archives. Until then, everyone thought the state song was the University of Minnesota fight song.

I'm a happy bunny tonight.
The guy who runs the website I posted the video on had received a complaint asking him to remove it. He has done some research on Muriel Robin, the comedian, and asked a few French people for their opinions on her and has come to the conclusion that neither she or the sketch are racist, and that my comments on the video should have been taken into account by any non fluent French speaker who watched it.
He has left the video on the site.

It's always nice to have someone with brains in charge of web sites isn't it.
It makes surfing the Net a lot more enjoyable. http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k267/deemark/Emoticons/typing.gif
