Someone finally had enough of Phelps shielding is hatred with his "right to free speech"

Phelps had his day in court and the scales finally tipped on the side of human decency.

It is about damn time that the Phelps family got their arses burned. And hopefully all the other religious hate groups and all hate groups will think twice about taking away the rights of others weather living or dead.

His father said "he was not gay" but weather or not he was, doesn't give anyone the right to judge a person, by their own personal disturbed thinking!

I wonder how the Phelps family would feel if we all demonstrated at one of their funerals holding banners saying that "God hates fools and jerks"

Best to all (with just a few exceptions)

We threw this jerk out of the country for his hate crimes. I suggest yours do the same.

Hey Dee...

As much as I'd like to see that happen, where could we send them? I mean what other nation would take them... Iraq???? Besides, unfortunately I think that they are protected by one of the few constitutional rights that still exists... The right to be a bigoted, big mouth fool and jerk... It's the American way... Just ask G.W. Cheney, or the secretary of Stupidity, Condi Spice...

Best to all

Where they end up is not my concern. Feed 'em to the sharks for all I care.

On second thought, why make the sharks sick too?

You are SO absolutely right, Darlene, and again I'm wondering about things going on in the Land Of The Free. Obviously those hate groups haven't understood the basics of the constitution of their own country. Those rights like Pursuit of Happiness can't be devided... Isn't it sad that being gay still is a human rights issue in 2007?

Perhaps a web site under "godhatesphelps.com" would be useful. The domain appears to be owned by someone who isn't using it at the moment....

Or, as Randy suggested, people could show up at their funerals with signs reading "God Hates Inbreeding", etc. That'll show 'em.

"God Hates Fred Phelps ... well, not really.
In fact, we don't even hate Fred Phelps, and we
certainly don't presume to speak for God at all."

I agree with those of you who were disappointed that the Marine's father felt compelled to say that his son wasn't gay. In fact, it has really disgusted me that most of the country didn't give a damn about Phelps and his band of maniacs as long as they were waving their signs at the funerals of gays/people withe AIDS. I am, though, pleased that whoever it was - that someone finally decided to legally take him on and not continue to shrug and say "what are ya gonna do? Free speech."

Dee, I completely admire your country for telling Phelps that he and his hate mongering were not welcome ... they were smart enough to enforce the value of hatred is not an something that one must simply accept.

Maybe I'm missing something Judy, but it does seem pointless to make a law designed to protect people or groups of people and then not enforce it. If that’s the case then why create the law to begin with?

I will never comprehend how spewing hate (or doing acts of violence) is okay if we call it "free speech" but then there is a lot in life I will never understand.

People like the Phelps clan love to defend their activities under the guise of "free speech". However, it is a longstanding principle of American law that hate speech and harassment are not protected forms of expression. Getting someone to enforce the laws against same is, unfortunately, another matter.

There is much to be said for the old-fashioned practice of shunning idiots of the ilk of Phelps. The problem is the media gives them all this exposure to boost their ratings and rile people up - and it is just fueling the flames. The Phelps filth was just here in Annapolis "demonstrating" outside the gates of the Naval Academy. He had two small children with him, holding the "God hates fags" signs. They should be arrested for child abuse. Most people just ignored them, but the press was there, taking pictures to plaster on front pages - giving them exposure way out of proportion to their significance, which is negligble. They are just media-hungry severely disturbed people.
