Webroot Desktop Firewall 5.5
Commercial personal firewall, for free
Platform Windows XP, Windows Vista
Type freeware
Manufacturer Webroot
Size 3.3MB
Webroot Desktop Firewall 5.5 was previously a commercial-grade software firewall that is now available for free. It’s superb for installing on your home computer, but it only ships with a free license for 1 PC and for personal-use only.
Note that you to register through Webroot in order to obtain your download and serial code. Your serial code will be emailed to you on return. If you’re an existing Webroot Spy Sweeper user, you can use this serial code within Desktop Firewall.
(note from Paul) From experience I can say that Webroot's stuff is good stuff.

Yep...webroot spy sweeper caught a trojan of mine the other day...no more.
I also like Xoftspy and Paretologic antispyware very much...they are fast and catch some really bad stuff, but they missed the trojan, unless Webroot got to it first. Between them all, I don't miss much, and scan every week regularly, oftener if I slow down at all or get a gut feeling that something is amiss. I always get a lot of cookies every time, some keystroke stuff sometimes.
I have the Spysweeper with anti virus, rootkit, the whole 9 yards, and am about to go for the firewall, hoping it doesn't interfere too badly with the Windows firewall. If it does, what do I do? Would appreciate advice on this.
...and one can't forget the Paretologic RegClean...best rated registry cleaner, and it's very good...cleans up things so I don't get all clogged up with bad routes, other misleads. Good program.
Do a scandisc clean, then run RegClean, then defrag...once a month keeps me nice and healthy. It really does help to run such utilities now and then!

You should only run ONE firewall at a time otherwise you'll probably bog the system down so bad you won't be able to do -anything-. You're just asking for frustrations running two simultaneously imho. I'd put money on the Webroot firewall over the WinDOZE firewall. The Windoze firewall does NOT have a good rep. It's better than nothing I guess but..... What -I- run is the old and now defunct (bought out by Symantec) Sygate Personal Firewall and the still active and updated Jetico Personal Firewall. As long as a firewall runs and runs well there's really no need to upgrade the thing.

For all of those purposes I use FixIt Utilities. FixIt Utilities incorporates -all- of those abilities plus a whole slug of others as well. It's saved my butt a time or two or three. It is NOT for the novice however. It can save your butt, or if the inexperienced or unknowing get their hands on it and start messing around without knowing what they're doing it can cause a disaster as well.
Thanks for the input Paul...I'll stick with the RegClean for now, since I have, in the past, erased some pretty important stuff through inexperience and ignorance...it could easily happen again, no thanks!
I would get the Webroot update on the firewall, but I get no response from the link...oh well. If I did get the WR, I'd dis the Windoze.
BTW, the trojan detected by WR was a false positive, according to their website, but good to know that it errs on the side of the conservative...the only conservative view I hold at the moment! LOL

I just tried it and it worked like a charm for me. You -did- know that it's javascript dependent didn't you? The link I mean. Then you get directed to a page where you fill out registration data and they mail you the download link. Just make sure you've got javascript active, click the link, fill out the registration data and click again. They'll mail you a download link after that.
Annabel, glad to hear Simba's doing alright. If Simba's doing okay then you'll do okay as well if you're anything like me and my animals(owners). ;) My cat/owner is being a little freaky right now but she'll get over it. KIDS! They're all the same,.... whether they're two legged or four.
:D
