That would be my Raggedy Ann costume that I made for myself around 1979. I even dyed a mop for the hair, and I had red and white striped knee socks. I went with my friend Jesse (RIP) to some of the gay bars in Indy. At one of the bars I even won 2nd prize--$25! One guy I danced with refused to believe that I was a "girl." hmmm

Jesse, and artist, made up his costume at the last minute, and he was a bug. He made the body from a garbage bag and wore my green tights! Somewhere I have a picture of the 2 of us...

It was great fun, and I miss him.

The costume I usually wear now is a large button that says, "This IS my costume!"

okay, i said this in aanother post but since this is the one about costumes, i find it necessary. it will be the costume i'm making this year for myself. in the last 40 years, if i've worn 5 halloween costumes, that is a lot so this is really big in a lot of ways. it was my sister's suggestion and i laughed, and am still alughing about it. when i get pics, and i hope they are good ones, i'll post em...anyway... I'm going to be...marcia, drumroll please... an infected esophogus!! is that not too funny!!!

It's so easy to go as Courtney Love - the smeared lipstick and mascara takes practically no effort at all :D

Or one could take off one's underpants and go as Britny. Mixty - you must be a nurse. If you are not, I think you may be missing your calling.
My most fun costume was ET. I used an ET mask, but made the rest of the costume out of various pieces of clothing. Then, I stratigically placed a flashlight under my shirt, to make my heart glow. It was great fun until the flashlight got overheated. OUCH!
The costume I liked the best went over like a lead balloon. Tie dyed shirt, fringed around the bottom, big peace symbol and lots of beads around my neck. Big curly hair full of flowers. Long dangling earrings. Pink eye shadow and pale pink lipstick. Bell bottomed jeans and sandals. I went around passing out love beads instead of candy. I was having a ball, but nearly everyone told me I didn't need a costume to come as an old hippie, I could just have come as myself. That hurt.

When I was in High School (a thousand years ago), I found a huge overcoat in the basement closet...it came down to my ankles, at least...so I got a white scarf, spilled red ink over it and tied it around my head, put rolled up towels under a Tee shirt, and buttoned the overcoat over the top of my head, with the scarf around the collar, wore tall riding boots, leather gauntlets, and carried a lighted jack o'lantern under my arm...I was the headless horseman!
Noone knew who I was, and I won first prize.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Many years later, my ex and I were members of a Yacht Club in the SF Bay Area, and they had great parties. I made us Robot suits, with milk carton boobs that had a little light strategically placed, activated by a battery and metal contacts on the gloves. On our head we wore little fiberoptic lamps.
The rest was shiny green wrapping paper and aluminum foil tunics, with green tights. I was going to equip the ex with a bilge pump hose, but he drew the line at that. We won again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~````

The best one was the refrigerator box printed with orange tempera put on with a sponge, a little black roof and crooked vent pipe. The ex wore that with suspenders, and, with pants on the floor, it looked just like somebody was in the outhouse! One woman opened the door and let out a shriek that would have shattered glass! Everyone wanted to dance with the Brick Sh** House!
Yep...you guessed it...first prize.
The best part was, we had to transport it on the deck of a boat across the bay to another yacht club which was hosting the party. What a trip!:D

It isn't big DU, but a few kids are now 'doing it'. A thousand years ago, in my younger days, it was just a mystery that happened on "Leave it to Beaver" etc. However, it seems like a great excuse for kids and adults to dress up, and Karen...

One guy I danced with refused to believe that I was a "girl." hmmm

you'll always be a girl to me.:D

Well, my first and last costume untill now. It was a vampirecostume. I made it up myself out of ordinary clothes. A long black dress, fishnetstockings and -gloves. Nothing very special but a good base. I also had a piece of cloth which was silver one one side. I used that as a cape. The most dramatic effect was the make-up though. I had made my face kind of white. It was shiny and transparent, so I rather looked very pale instead of clown-white. With grey and black I made my eyes look all hollow. Some bloodred lipstick for the contrast. Also I drew 2 little holes on my neck and some 'blood' trickling over my chin. I finished it with a wild hairdo (lots of spray!) and fake fangs. I scared a little kid who was unsuspectingly stepping out of the house when it was dark :D I had such a good time... I lost the teeth at the buffet though... :eek:

My brother once went to a Halloween party dressed as a Ginsu Knife Set. The same year he was an Unattended Parcel. Alas, I never saw either costume.

Somewhere in the archives I do have some early childhood ( age 3 0r 4 ) photos of Halloween. I really don't remember any of my costumes from my youth, but in the late 90's I did go to 2 Halloween murder mystery weekends, and I DID dress up...

My Mom used to make our costumes for us. They were incredible, and we always won prizes for the best costumes.

One that she made for me that I absolutely HATED was a Raggedy Ann costume. It was a great costume, but I thought it was way too "girly" and did NOT want to wear it. Somewhere in the family album is a picture of me at about age 5, in that costume looking absolutely miserable.

Another one she made that I LOVED was a Joan of Arc costume - essentially a suit of armor in fabric.
But the best one of all was the toreador costume which she actually made for my eldest sister for a ballet recital. It was made of red and gold silk, with an embroidered cape. It was gorgeous. I think I won 3 first place prizes for that costume before I outgrew it. Thanks Ma.

Of course I am talking about food here!
But you all know what a vampire eats and she was still untouched by others... MWUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Um, well I could tell you Ginny but that would defeat the purpose of the whole masquerade thing.

It’s hard enough outwitting the pesky paparazzi as it is. :cool:
