I collected my laptop from repair this morning, and I'm just so happy to have it back working again at last. Let this be a warning to people with universal power input never to get their +ves mixed up with their -ves because it could prove costly!!!! I learned the hard way and now the head has been taped to the rest of it. Now to move on and buy it some pressies.... :)

Sorry to bother you again, guys but now I have a question about antiviral software. My AVG programme tells me it's out of date. (computer hasn't been used since last August) and I know I'm not online at home but is there anything I can do before I get Broadband Internet to update the AVG on it?

Bought it a new scanner today (£3.00) looking forward to being able to scan things again :)

Hi Ben

If you have dialup i'd recommend Avast antivirus, its free and its good. www.avast.com (http://www.avast.com)

i'd wait for the broadband personally.. make the antivirus your first update when you get online.. Make sure you have a good firewall program (Zonealarm is still free, i believe) and check in with the geeks here afterward :)

Yes you can update AVG - BUT - you must have some way to get online to get the latest definitions. This is true of ALL antivirus programs be it Avast, AVG, AntiVir, McAfee, Norton, NOD, etc. etc. etc.

The way it's done with AVG is you have to get the definitions and save them to your system somewhere (I suggest the desktop for ease). Once you have them right-click the icon in the system tray and choose . . . . . Oh heck. I'll be back with the explicit but simple directions. It's really easy but I've forgotten and will have to figure it all out again because it's been so long. Back in a bit.

Okay, here we go..... Went right over to the site to get this.

If you need to perform a manual update first you will need to get the latest update files from the AVG Free website at the AVG Free Update Files http://free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-updates

The Priority updates contain the full virus database.
The Recommended updates include the database and new program updates.
The Optional updates include those plus additional files that may be of help.

Choose the one that applies to your system, if in doubt, get the recommended or the optional update file and download the file to a directory on your computer that you can find later. You must remember where this is because you will have to tell AVG where to find these files later.

After you have the files,

1. Verify and update your computer's time and date, AVG uses this info to determine if you have the correct files.

2. Open the Control Center,

3. Double Click on the Update Manager or select it then press the Properties button at the bottom of the screen.

4. On the Properties screen unselect the option labeled "Do not ask for the update source", click Apply and Ok.

5. Now click the Update button on the bottom of the screen.

6. In the pop-up window, click the Folder button.

7. Navigate to the folder where you had downloaded the update files into and click Ok. (Sometimes this needs done twice for AVG to see the file.)

8. AVG will update now with the file you had selected unless it contains the same as you already had.

That should be all you need to have updated your system.

You -should- be able to get the updates somehow if you are able to write a message here, so all you should have to do is get the bin file (update) and copy it over to your system if it's not the same one you use to access this board and update it the way the directions say above. It's really not that hard. You just need to get all the steps in place in the right order.

This'll take some reading, but at the moment I'm at an Internet Cafe. Planning Broadband sometime before Christmas as we need it so very much now.

Thanks Paul for taking time to explain everything.

Bad news, but it was to be expected. My wonderful dear laptop died again last night, possibly due to the battery needing replaced anyway. This will cost me a further £70 in the form of a rechargeable external battery which will be cheaper than a replacement internal battery. I have to get the power source absolutely right before I can do anything else.

After that we'll be cooking with gas, and I can go ahead and get Broadband in.... Pressies mean wireless device, headphones and (possibly) a new printer when funds allow. Then I can watch concerts, read interviews, post on the Board just like the rest of us do, and if anyone makes a noise at 4 am then I can just post on the Board and all will still be well.... :D
