Totally excited about the one year anniversary....!! Of all the things that I can remember our NZ Governments doing, this - and the Anti-nuclear policy - is something I am proud to have been a part of and to have witnessed in my life time.

Rock on David Lange (now deceased), and Helen Clarke! Your legacies will always live on.

Civil Unions are now 6 years old in Vermont. The only thing that's gone awry is that we elected a republican governor.

Other than that, Vermont has not slid into the lake, the mountains have not crumbled, and no lesbians are known to have concieved via immaculate conception or parthenogeneosis.

Go figure!

Alarming ain't it? LOL

Mike, You reminded me of a letter to the editor I sent a couple of years ago when I was still living downtown. Now I'm by no means an outspoken political type person, but reading this woman's garbage, well I saw red!

My letter follows hers, and it's the only time in my life that I've written to a newspaper:

(February, 2004) Centretown News

‘Homosexual behaviour totally void of truth’

Re: “Same-sex marriage and its hidden economic opportunities” (Jan. 23)

First of all, I would like to say that I find reading articles in support of homosexual behaviour totally void of truth and logic, leading only to confusion (and sadness). Furthermore, I am surprised by the educational and political (so-called higher) system of today, that would promote or “tolerate” under the guise of (false) “compassion,” such lies, without a thorough (academic and/or other) investigation of the issue.

I also do not understand how a system can degenerate to the point of allowing itself to be forced into giving rights, contrary to their real needs? For example, what parent would give its child something bad just because they asked?

Now, I realize that by expressing these views, I become a target of some people’s rotten eggs, like “homophobic,” “prude,” and “what an ugly thing to say.” And even though I find this sad, that these names have to be thrown out at all, I find it sadder still that there is no serious sit-down, adult discussion on the issue. (I understand, too, that this probably happens because gays and lesbians and their supporters, have already made up their minds and have now taken a stand against God, the church (which they brush aside) and anyone else who stands in their way. I find this behavior devoid of reason or logic.

Gays fail to realize that God, the church and others care, and are speaking for their well-being, not their harm. If as children their parents told them not to touch a stove because they can get burned, would they accuse their parents of being evil and discriminating against them? So what am I saying?

On an individual level, I am saying that each homosexual should humbly look deeper (and not in the gay community, but inquire of God, the church and yes . . . the “other side,” be open as you are asking others to be).

On a societal level, and in response to Mr. Fegelman’s article, the government is doing nothing wrong by not giving further rights to gays, because in truth, they do not qualify.

No, it’s not a “conspiracy” on the part of the government or society, nor a question of dollars.

Sylvia Bertolini, Bay Street

February 6, 2004

Today, as I was enjoying a morning cup of coffee at my favourite centretown coffee house, I was amazed to read a letter from Sylvia Bertolini — not because I know her, but because of the words it contained. It amazes me (though never surprises me) to see or read of blatant discrimination here in Canada in 2004.

How can any thinking person write that Gays “in truth” do not qualify for the assignment of human rights afforded to heterosexual citizens of our country? Or suggest that people who are homosexual should more-deeply examine themselves? What makes you assume we do not?

If anything, most Gay people in our culture are forced from an early age to examine themselves by the very catalyst of living in a society not yet rid of bigotry. Racial, or otherwise.

Ms Bertolini, I am a Gay Christian. I attend a bible-based church weekly and commune with my loving God moment-by-moment on a daily basis. I have no idea if you actually know any one who is Gay or Lesbian, but it seems you do not.

The only thing worse in my opinion than spreading misinformation, is thinly-veiled hatred. Jesus came to teach us things of the heart, but our stupid heads have mostly gotten in the way ever since. I am disgusted that you take the approach of likening me to a child. I am an adult man — 44 years old — and do not need misguided instruction from you on who I ought to love, or how, in your opinion.

Furthermore, Gay and Lesbian couples have and will continue to live together and raise their families in Canada, whether the Gov’t sanctions same-gender marriage or not. That they have chosen to finally do so here in Ontario is a step in the right direction, and deservedly to their credit.

No amount of squawking about love between two people of the same gender, will prevent that love from being. Imagine how much more pleasant life would be for all members of the human race if Love could be the motivation behind how we relate to one another as we go through our daily lives here in centretown Ottawa, and the world over.

Consider what Jesus instructed us: Love one another.

Dee...

The sad thing about them pesky "Kill for Christ" christians is that the parts of the bible that they follow are the parts that they selectively choose indicating that others need to agree with their individual beliefs... Personally after the likes of many of the POLITICALLY CORRECT LEADERS OF THE LOCAL RELIGIOUS CULTS, I find the organizations that follow the teaching of mans assorted opinions of what the bible says and means seems so far removed from what my heart and mind might think it should mean....
I see the likes of the Pope, or Falwell, or Roberts and the other blowhards that use thier place behind the alter to press their political opinions and attempt to control the lives and lifestyles of others....

I read that jesus was born in a manger because there was no other place available... A valuable lesson? Yes??? Yet now churches and cathedrals have grown so large that MEN have decided that the "House of God" should have listed hours of operation to avoid vandels and the like... I often wonder if God approved this idea.... I would have thought that the house of God would be always open for worship or sanctuary to those in need... The bible says.... "Humble thyself before the Lord thy God", yet the magnificance of the building structure is often anything but humble while people stand homeless in the rain...

I was always taught that God would be the judge of man... A good lesson but obviously that did not include gays or those that were other then religious zealots of the OPPOSING cults, races or lifestyles....

Do I see the woman that wrote the letter you responded to as being homophobic? Not really, more just another bigot that feels if one fails to agree with her then they are wrong in the eyes of HER god.... But then I'm sure her god is featured on the Disney Channel and is a close friend of Donald Duck... Can you say "Goofy, our lord almighty?"

There are some truely wonderful Christians out here in our world but unfortunately they don't seem to be heard of very much.

Best to all....

I have long believed that if Jesus were to show up again, most of the "kill for Christ" people would not only fail to recognize him, but would denounce him as an impostor.

Which leads to a sad rhetorical question: what if Jesus DID come back years ago and is now cooling his heels in a state hospital, shot full of Thorazine in an attempt to rid him of his "delusions"?

The same, of course, could be said of any "Messiah" who turned up and stood behind his words. Western society in all likelihood would not tolerate him or her for long. Sigh.

I don’t see people with her opinions as homophobic either, Randy. Note that I never called her that once. Only she decried that people would call her such for mouthing off with her garbage. That’s why I titled my post: Battling the bigots and not Hating the Homophobes. Frankly, I think “homophobic” is a misnomer – that people don’t really have a fear of homosexuals, just a bigotry of something they cannot comprehend. Usually due to misinformation or utter ignorance of facts.

And another thing ... LOL

Jesus was enraged when he discovered commerce going on in the temples, so these prosperity Christians obviously cannot connect the obvious dots. The RC church is the worst offender when it comes to hoarding wealth and real estate too. He also advised anyone wanting to follow him, to sell off all worldly goods they had then come back and see him.

And another thing ... LOL

I call my self a Gay "Christian" only in the sense that I try to follow the examples of Jesus of Nazareth – but I reject all the corruption that is happening in his name nowadays. These are blind guides leading willing fools.

A drunk man who smelled like beer sat down on a subway next to a priest.
The mans tie was stained, his face was plastered with red lipstick, and a

half empty bottle of gin was sticking out of his torn coat pocket. He

opened his newspaper and began reading. After a few minutes the man turned to the

priest and asked, "Say Father, what causes arthritis?" The priest replies,

"My Son, it's caused by loose living, being with cheap,

wicked women, too much alcohol and a contempt for your fellow man,

sleeping round with prostitutes and lack of a bath".

The drunk muttered in response, "Well, I'll be damned," then returned

to his paper. The priest, thinking about what he had said, nudged the man and

apologized. "I'm very sorry. I didn't mean to come on so strong. How long have you

had arthritis?" The drunk answered, "I don't have it, Father. I was just reading here

that the Pope does".

A couple on my block tends to get into alcohol-fueled altercations every week, which usually end up requiring the services of the police and more than once an ambulance.

Rather wish a nice, committed gay couple would move in when they move on, as they surely will before long. This neighborhood needs some class.

As you know, as I can't drive again, so, maybe you can drive to meet me? I would like to meet another Janis Ian Fan. I met Janis (briefly) at Sydney.
Maybe we will see Janis again, and listen to play, once again! :) ;)
