My dad taught to do it with a glass and to lead the spiders and other monsters out in the garden - so that they would come in again through another window... but once I was at home alone and found a spider on my wall... I found it was much too big and toooo scary for this method... so I took a book and ... but later on I was afraid to take this book with the spider still sticking on it from my shelf for years...:o
That's the spider's revenge, I think.

having said that, I live in an area that is full of foxes, frogs and all kinds of wildlife... I've had had foxes in front of my window and toads on my doorstep so I shall just wish this animal away lol
Do frogs eat spiders?
Just a thought. :p
I'd keep the spider. I'd much rather have her than what she must be eating!...besides, they are really fascinating to watch spinning their webs, truly amazing critters.

Once upon a time, apparently, some people recommended Lysol as a gargle. People tried it. Some of them swallowed a bit and died. End of recommendations!

August/September is primo spider season around here. I have garden spiders all over my back yard. They spin those VERY LARGE webs right at face level. There is one blocking the back door to my garage. I don't have the heart to destroy it. As long as they are not crawling on me, I live and let live.
This seems like an opportune time to revive the camel spider picture from an old thread:

Oak, I hate you *barf* That mas my dinner I just lost... :(
Britain seems to be overrun by giant spiders at the moment. I am on a British forum and several people talk about having big spiders crawling around their house. One of them was shocked to see that when she tried to catch the spider in a pintglass (!) she accidentally chopped off two of the spiders' legs because it was too big for the pintglass

Ok guys you all have come up with some of the most gross things I have ever heard of or seen. I always let spiders be because they kill a lot worse critters that hang around. People used to freak when they came to my house because of all of the spiders and their webs up and down the side of my house. The spiders could build a web in front of the entance door in no time so that when anyone left they were afraid after feeling the web in their face and hair that it included spiders. Actually I loved it when people freaked but..... not giant spiders and worse  douching with Lysol  . Please, I will not be mean to my friends anymore just keep that Lysol away from me!
Peace.....I think,

first,
california and other far western stats aare full of black widows. every week when i worked n the yard i'd have to clean up at least 3 large nests, they are not specifically large tho and their bit is only dangerous if you are bitten by many or if you have bad heart disease or other major diseases. texas and other hot dry states is full of tarantula's they bite harder and increase in venom with size. out hear in the east we have woodspiders that carry the west nile virus, more dangerous than all of the above and small and "normal" looking for a spider. none of them will bite unless you ask for it all of them are easily moved with gloved hands without fear.
next,
godsistah! lysol??? lysol??? dang! that has to hurt! i mean it's a product used for cleaning floors and food surfaces, one spray and it will kill any insect you want...dang i just can't believe that woman in the add used lysol that way! aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

The spiders are getting a lot bigger here. I am terrified for some reason. I can't even go in a room with one and I can usually sense them before I see them. Dee, I'm not sure what the present ingredients of Lysol might be but it used to contain carbolic acid. Not really something that should be near any delicate or even not so delicate portions of the human anatomy.
Now about those spiders....

This must be spider invasion week. Evening before last, I was innocently lounging on my bed watching TV when I was suddenly alarmed by something crawling on my arm. That something was a long-legged demon spider. Nearly gave me a bloody heart attack.
I had to bash him a good five times before he expired. And I felt not a bit of remorse as his wretched and gnarled corpse spun down the toilet and into oblivion.

I have sympathy for those who wish to save the arachnids. However, I seem to be the one who always gets bit in his sleep (most recently above my eyelid), so I've lost my patience with them. Otherwise, they really don't bother me, and they really stick to their own business. The more you see, the more likely you have too many other insects in your home that they are preying upon, this should be even more disturbing than the presence of spiders to most. What's the old tale, you eat something like 8 teaspoons of spiders (when sleeping) in your life? The ones that "bug" me most are the little, furry, jumpy ones. Obviously, cockroaches are the most disgusting and disturbing thing to find in your home. Really though, I don't find many inscects in my home, except for a recent horrible trend of centipedes, which I hate the most. They look like loogies with legs, and scurry so fast and creepily. Have you ever tried to kill one? They usually play dead and run to hide and bother you another day, although one time the little "bugger" seemed to actually lunge toward me when I failed my mission.:D
This must be spider invasion week.
It is. Fall is starting. The yearly nightmare for every arachnaphobe :o

Yes, it's strange. For some reason, it's an insect thing, because I'm not even as bothered by larger and deadlier creatures. I think it's because they're so small and able to hide, and crawl on you when you're sleeping. You may find it odd to know that I have been known to pick Timber Rattlesnakes by the tail and move them to safer areas. I've also chased away a bear, a wild boar, and an angry Rottweiller. But, alas, spiders and centipedes make my skin crawl. Another odd fact is that I've played with a tarantula on the palm of my hand, and no problem! Must be a subliminal fear of the unknown or hidden, Dr. Freud where are you?:D

Years ago, while living in the country, I went down to the kitchen for a midnight snack. As I knew where everything was, I didn't bother turning the lights on. Halfway across the kitchen, my bare foot landed on something that gave way slightly and made a very strange popping noise. THEN I turned the lights on.
Yep, it was a spider of legendary proportions, not even close to completely squashed by my then-175 pounds. Mind, I cleaned it up right away. With the ash shovel from the wood stove. The stove made a fine last resting place for the spider and it departed without benefit of clergy.
Sometime I'll have to tell the tale of the ladybug on my arm.

I never did step on a mouse, but there were several occasions when I opened the pantry to find myself eye to eye with one of the little suckers. They're actually kinda cute, but when they pop up where they don't belong, both parties involved generally levitate.
I had a brother and a sister who were allergic to pet dander, so cats were out of the question. One year we had an especially rampant plague of mice, and I had a "line" of at least six traps (yes, I know--nasty things--but the mice were not about to leave on their own) running for several weeks. On one occasion I was watching TV late one night when I heard a trap snap in the kitchen. I waited a discreet interval, went over and cleaned out the trap, then went back to my movie. I didn't even get back to my chair before the same trap went off again, and when I went back to empty it, there were TWO mice caught in the same trap.
Really wished I'd had a cat just then.
Eek!

I became a vegetarian a few months ago because I've been becoming more and more Buddhist in my thinking. I will catch most bugs and put them outside. Nevertheless, yesterday I picked up my cat's bowl to fill it with water and, as I was lifting it over the sink, this big spider crawled out from under it.
I turned the water on hot and washed it down the drain. I'm sorry I did it and can swear there was no thought involved. I'm still shuddering at the thought of having been that close to one.
Ugh. I know they have a right to live and an important job to do in the scheme of things, but they freak me right out.

I suppose putting a spider in syrup and showing it to the fever sufferer, telling them that it will cure them, generally brings an immediate response of "no thanks--I really feel better already".
My doctor can produce the same miraculous cures by suggesting that what the patient needs is "a tube down your throat". Folks feel signs of improvement right on the spot.

Last night my partner and I took our two youngest out for the evening. (Our oldest was out for some special time with one of her respite providers.) So we agreed that we would pick the restaurant and they could pick the entertainment. Of course, they chose to windowshop at ToysRUs for their big event of the evening. It's not often that we take in such a sight and my god, what an overload! So, my partner gets called away by the respite provider and I finish up with the little ones in the store. We leave the place to wait for a few minutes outside sitting on a ledge waiting for the rest of the family to pick us up. We talk a while and suddenly Olivia takes a huge leap off the ledge and across the sidewalk. "Mama, what's that bug behind you?" I turn to check it out and at first I thought it was a big grasshopper or locust, etc. Nope. It's a spider as big as my thumb from tip to wirst. The last time I saw a spider that big was in Florida. I am so glad that I hadn't leaned up against that wall....
I generally catch them and let 'em go. But, I have to admit, I'm not sure I would have with this one. My mom used to put every extension she could find on the vacuum hose and suck them up. I dunno who changed the bag, though. Can't imagine she could have gotten my dad to do that...

Changing the bag could have been hazardous :D Probably the least painful way of going about getting rid of the things. Did you actually have any bad luck after that?????

Laughing! Andrea, that is one of the funniest costumes I have ever seen! Now, was it hard to get into the dog suit? :p

Costume? But isn’t that Spideydog (http://www.uyghur1.com/uyghur_photos/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pos=23)? So confusing.

I've met that dog....fortunately it had its legs retracted during the encounter or I might well be hospitalized now.
