In case it's of any interest to anyone, "PDF" stands for portable document format/file.

Thank you Paul, I always wondered what it meant.

OK, I'm going to get on my soapbox and say this only once. :-}

Please stop calling yourself a tech-tard. :-} I have been saying this for years. I am an old computer geek. I've been doing this stuff since the late 1970s. I have never heard anyone say: "I'm such a retarded driver because I'm not a mechanic." I have been saying to my colleagues, for years (nay, decades!) that you shouldn't have to be a programmer-type to use a computer any more than you should necessarily have to be mechanically inclined to drive a car.

Sure, it helps, but consider: you can rent a car, practically anywhere in the world. As long as you know the language well enough to get around safely, you can drive that car. There are some cases where you need to be able to drive a "standard", but automatic transmissions are becoming available pretty much anywhere. (World travelers, please feel free to correct this point. All my travel has been domestic for the last few years.)

Anyway, you'll probably be able to drive whatever you rent, no matter the country, no matter what brand. Sure, you might never figure out the CD player or the rear defroster, but you will be able to drive a car, even if you've never heard of that brand before, the first time you see it. Yes, I know there are some exceptions but, in general, this is true.

Until we make computers as easy to operate as your average sedan, we are not doing our job well enough. It's our problem, Darlene, not yours. It is we who should be feeling sheepish, not you.

Yes, of course, you are using what is called a "general purpose computer" and your car only has to perform one function. But, in general, most people use personal computers for a similar set of standard tasks. Most people don't even need a word processor, just a simple text editor. Who here uses even half of the features available in Microsoft word?

As much as I dislike Windows, I was around before the days of standardized key sequences, and I can tell you it was a real effort trying to learn the print command in every different program one used! Not to mention no common support for peripheral devices, including printers...

Windows did make this better for the average user, and helped revolutionize personal computing, whatever its faults. (And I'm a Unix Geek who uses a PowerBook at home; you don't have to sell me on The Evils of Micro$oft!)

Now it's time for the the rest of us professionals to take the next step, revolutionize the user interface, so Darlene can feel as empowered and competent using her computer as she does using her car.
