Janis was very warmly received in Vicar Street, Dublin, this evening getting great cheers after many of the songs and a standing ovation - we got 2 encores! I have tried to remember the set list - I don't have the right order but I think I've got them all:

1st Half:

Danger Danger
Crocodile Song
The Great Divide
Old American Folk Song (written last week; v. funny; went down very well!)
Fly too high (Audience participation)
From me to you
I hear you sing again

2nd Half:

Here comes the night
Mary's Eyes
The Last Train
17 (some audience participation)
Autobiography
Broken Promises
Between the Lines (Audience participation)
Joy

Encores

Haven't I got Eyes
Jesse

I got to meet a Rudie called Sue who had come over from the UK for the concert and who will be seeing Janis again in Milton Keynes! Hope you enjoyed the concert, Sue.

Sounds like fun! Though a little odd with audience participation. I hope you had a wonderful time! Thank you for the set list, it is interesting to see when new songs are added in (Old American Folk Song).

Thanks for the review Anna, it looks like Janis always gets a sing along from the audience in Ireland and she has stated somewhere in a interview that she likes that a lot. Isnīt it so that the more the audience in Ireland sing along the more they like the performer? Nice review and thanks for the set list.

Thanks Anna! Sounds like a great gig- and Janis often comments on how the Irish crowds love to join in:)

2 of my favourites seem to be missing from the setlist (she played them in Birighton)- On The Other Side and When I Lay Down

Roll on Thursday in Amasterdam :-)

how did Janis's Irish radio appearances go?

Well, in Brighton, "On the other side" was not on the original set list (I know, cuz I have the set list that Rowy gave me* as a souvenir of that evening) but was an audience request that she did. For that, we have Jak and Sue to thank.

*that you took from the stage for her, David, if I remember right

just got home from seeing Janis in Vicar St, Dublin.... amazing...
I was first introduced to her music nearly 20 years ago as I was coming out and struggling with all of that...my older sister and her girlfriends introduced me to her music (funny that!) ...
there were far too many candles burning and far too many thoughts in my head about no one understanding how I felt, and a Janis Ian tape playing in the stereo... (far too many things going on between my sister and her girlfriend at the time as well.... not a happy night if I remember correctly)...

The "Between The Lines" tape finished and whilst everyone went to bed I grabbed the tape, shoved it into my walkman, pressed play, and fell asleep listening to the most amazing, honest and forgiving voice singing about love and love lost.... those songs....I can't tell you which was my favourite as the whole album became a soundtrack for my life at the time..."bright lights and promises", "light a light" "lover's lullaby"...
I then went overseas to Japan, and luckily I found many older and newer tapes of hers, and I was able to explore some of Janis's other work...I played them non stop on my new walkman.... majestic, but nothing would ever mean as much as that album....hey, it was first exposure to her, the poet, storyteller, that we know and love...
skip to the current and I am now 35 and I can say she and her music has helped me through some very rough times in my life...coming from australia I have never had the opportunity to see her perfom until tonight and I was overcome with emotion when she sang a few of the old songs that I have been playing to myself (and my friends) over the last 20 years... and god, I was overcome at times with tears but god I laughed at some of her stories...

The fabulous thing I learnt tonight from Janis is her depth.... I had never heard a lot of the songs she played tonight, but myself, and my boyfriend were completely captivated by her voice and her songs... JANIS... YOU ARE AMAZING....
thank you so much for the music which has sustained me over these years and got me through some very emotional times...
I know I wouldn't be here if I hadn't had your songs playing through the stereo/walkman/CD player/iPod....

I was thinking of you last night. It sounds like a brilliant show, not sure about the audience participation - but PeteCC would love it!

You're right about the Brighton set list Chet, I think David thought Rowy deserved it for her arranging all our tickets... his face when you ended up with it was a picture! :) "Through The Years*" was requested by Jak and Sue - and how wonderful that they did! It was on the list for the LRC but didn't happen there, so they made sure of it the following night - it was their note which Janis made fun of trying to read up close then at a distance.

Welcome to the board Hamish, sounds like all your dreams came true last night, and you kissed Janis? Thanks for posting. (We don't normaly have so many threads on one topic, so don't mind Chet, her bark's worse than her bite!)

* On the Other Side - edited (but not corrected) so the following posts still make sense!

I didn't see it. Did you manage to take a picture?

Now, where have I heard this before? Sounds like something Dar said before.

Well, you know us little 'uns ... we think we're giants. :p

Hi Hamish,

Welcome to Janis Ian's message board.

I had very much the same experience as you regarding the Between The Lines album. I was 16 at the time BTL was a hit, and it brought me a lot of comfort after the sudden death of my first adult love. Also I came out to my family immediately following. I truly didn't think I'd live to see age 20.

Anyhow, I followed Janis’ music since then, found this Web site in the late 1990s, and actually saw Janis live in Toronto in May 2004. It was an absolutely amazing experience.

Anne, wasn't it the other way round- Janis did "Through the Years" as the last song in the LRC, and "On the Other Side" was the request Janis played in Brighton......

:p

ps welcome Hamish!

Thanks David, you are correct, more haste, less speed needed here!

"Through the Years" is Rowy and Lynda's song, and "On the Other Side" is what Jak and Sue requested.
Do you know we had four Sue/Susans at the LRC? Only one dippy Anne though!

;)

Anna, glad you enjoyed the Dublin concert. I hope Janis sings the new Old American Folk Song in London.

Welcome Hamish - I'm glad you enjoyed the night. I left out Society's Child from the 1st half!

Janis was on Ireland AM (TV3) this morning at approx. 8.40am. She sang At 17 and they cut ads in in the middle of the song - I couldn't believe it. Anyway, she did a good interview and sang Autobiography as well.

Hey all,

I was at the gig in Vicar street last night. Absolutely FAB!!! And was I pleased when the announcment came over the speakers that audio recording WOULD be allowed.

:D

So I have the concert on (admittedly very poor!) mp3, so WOO! I was a little disappointed that she didn't play On The Other Side, but maybe that's a good thing, since I tend to cry...

:o

And in response to the debate about wether the audience participation is cool, I think she enjoys it. It's only on her 'big' songs (as in, 17 and a few others) that it happens, and hey, she said she loves it that the Irish are always in key, so WOO!!! And even if she doesn't, I'm afraid that yes, Irish people at gigs just sing. It's a thing we do. If you're at a gig in Ireland and nobody's singing, well... that gig sucked!!!

Chet

We had audience participation at the Brighton show for "Fly Too High". She said she needed help with the lyrics and we were only too happy to oblige. Since Brighton was her second UK gig, I think it's safe to say she'll be having audience participation in most of her shows in this current tour. Not sure if there was any at Fareham - can someone who was there confirm? Also not sure about her earlier shows in the States since none of the reviews mentioned audience participation.

Hey guys,

I just finished going through the mp3 recordings of last night, and here's the full set list- I think Anna left a few out. (And in doing this I don't mean to come across as horrible, correcting you, Anna. Sorry if that's the way it seems!)

:)

Oh, and I've just realised they're now alphabetised, thanks to my computer, so these are not in the correct order, or even in the correct general set theme thing anymore!!! D'OH!!!

All those promises
At seventeen
Autobiography
Between the lines
Crocodile song
Danger Danger
Fly too high
From me to you
Haven't I got eyes?
Hear you sing again
Here comes the night
Jesse
Joy
Love is blind
Mary's eyes
Old American folk song (totally rocks, apparently is now my girlfriends new themesong!!!)
Society's child
The great divide
The last train

I think David UK's right. I don't remember 'On the other side' from the LRC. My partner doesn't like the song - he says that the words 'The children were in danger' don't fit - and I'm sure I would have remembered if I'd heard them.

Mind you, most of the time I was just in heaven listening to Janis so close. She could have sung the phone book and I probably wouldn't have noticed.

Anna, glad to hear that Vicar Street was good for Janis. Looking forward to the QEH, although it's a bit large and the thought of little Janis on that huge stage after the LRC will be a bit strange.

Wow, what confusion, you lot, about the UK LRC songs! Of such stuff are the great Histories of this world made. No wonder Janis is writing her own biography ... :D

The full set list, in sequence, is in The UK LRC (http://www.aftertones.flyer.co.uk/UKLRC.html) ... and JOY was the closing song, david!

The only one I left out was Society's Child which I had already noted in my second post above. Since you have the recording, Zoegh, I am sure we would all be interested in seeing the list in play order if possible. Thanks Zoegh.

Mary' s Eyes in Dublin, of course. I like that song very much.
And Irish people will love it I think.

I' d like to hear Janis sing for once Danny Boy...

Maybe I was more confused than I thought. Ah, but David, when I said david I was taking about david and not about David. See above posts. So there you are, thinking you'd maybe been confused, and you're really not being confused at all ... are you? :)

Where's that "Names" thread when it's needed?

Ok, I've tried to sort out the playlist in order, but because when I saved the individual tracks with their names, my computer alphabetised them... And I have exams in like, a week, so while I would LOVE to be able to spend time going through all my music (Seriously, it calms me, and yes, I'm weird!!!) I just can't, I'm too busy panicking!!!!

SORRY!

Hey wait a minute Anna. If you Irish are so darn fond of sing a longs how come you kept shushing me when I was singing along at the Club Cafe? ;) ;) oh, is singing on key a prerequisite? no wonder.........plus there was that whole DVD recording thing going on. ;)

So glad you all had such a grand time. I wonder if I'll EVER get to see Janis again. sigh...........

Tee Dar no sing.

I do rather hope you've become accomplished on the Tonette by now, though.

Anna from Dublin
04-27-2006, 02:19 AM
Dar, I shushed you at Club Cafe only because we had been asked not to sing along or make noise during the recording. Actually, I'm a great advocate of sing alongs. If it were left to me, we would all sing along on most songs, though not the really special quiet ones maybe. It also isn't good if just one person is singing along; if others don't join in, it is better to stop. I actually suggested to some participants before the show that we sing along at the LRC at Janismania and got a very negative reaction, so I dropped it. I think it is those up-tight, politically correct Americans!!;)

Love ya nonetheless Dar!

Anna.

At the UK LRC, there was a request for PeteCC not to sing along during the concert, and for Wes to sit on his hands (otherwise, he would end up drumming along to the songs). Wes did get some drumming through, altho quite softly, I think. But he more than "made up for it" when he took a picture which turned out to be the last shot in the roll and his camera went into auto-rewind mode, causing eveyone to look at him, and Janis to make a comment. When he tried to explain, she said "We don't need to know, that's too much information."
