View Full Version : Ultimate Best
JVC officially announced "Ultimate Best - Japan Only (VICP-63940)" will be released on September 21.
It is said that the CD includes "At 17", "Will You Dance", and "Love Is Blind" (All time Japanese favorites), as well as newly recorded "Today You're Mine" which is featured in Japanese TV commercial.
It sounds like all songs are K2HD-mastered.
Hi Abe!
Thanks for the info.
Have you heard Angela Aiki's Japanese version of "Will You Dance"? It's on YouTube, too. Here's the link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMJwQgFQJA4

Interesting - It's no longer listed for pre-order on the Amazon (good thing I didn't order it yet) - The information I'm getting from Japan is that it will still release on September 21, 2007, but now they're calling it "Janis Ian Ultimate Best" (Title subject to change) I'll update if I find out anything else.

This is one of my favorte JI songs. I wonder what the Japanese translation is since one of the posters said that it was more "pleasant."
Nice voice.

Hmmmm......why is it always polyester?
Mind, I shouldn't talk. Somewhere out there in the void, there are high school yearbooks containing photos of Yours Truly in a remarkably similar outfit (apart from the hair and guitar). Those were the days....
Dave, in Germany there was a silly song in the sixties or seventies about all these terrible materials which I hate: I remember only one verse of it: "Meine Schwester, die Polyester..." (My sister polyester) - that rhymes in German.

Kathleen, here's how it happened:
When I sold the Mine Music catalogue to Toshiba EMI Publishing Japan, in order to get out from the IRS, I asked if they wanted DAT copies of all the songs that hadn't been recorded. Their lawyers declined.
Two or three years ago, having lunch with my friend Etsuko and several other EMI folks in Japan, I mentioned it again, saying "There are forty plus songs you've never heard. We have lyrics, we have DATs. Would you like them?"
Turns out the attorneys hadn't mentioned it. Etsuko et al were quite excited, so when I came home, I made them copies of everything, re-recording anything that sounded absolutely awful.
A commercial company was looking for material, and EMI played them a bunch of ballads. They got very excited over "Today You're Mine," and asked if I would consider re-recording it in the studio for their new commercial.
(An aside - one of the things I love about Japanese publishing/advertising is how songs that would never stand a chance are suddenly propelled into the spotlight this way!)
I went in with Chad Hailey, engineer from FINB, and a gorgeous grand piano. We spent three hours getting it right, sweating through the deadline. Then the mastering folks, Eric and Don (also from FINB,) juggled things to master immediately and get it up onto an FTP so it could be uploaded immediately.
Reaction to the commercial was so overwhelming - with so many people contacting the company, EMI, and my website to ask where they could get a copy - that JVC decided to release a new "best of" specifically featuring Japanese releases that hadn't been available before, along with "Today You're Mine."
Hopefully, it will make a bit of noise!
From my own vantage point, there's something sweetly tender about going back to songs I wrote in the early to mid-70's, but never recorded. "Today You're Mine" is a lovely song, and I really enjoyed singing it. I think it's one of the better vocals I've done this past decade.
And of course, it doesn't hurt to have "Society's Child" on there! Or "You Are Love," which, even though the arrangement's overblown (hey, it was for a film, give me a break - I didn't arrange it, Teo Macero did,) hasn't been available anywhere before.

Thanks Janis!!! I really appreciate that you shared that with me, (and my Rudie pals!) I love "You are Love" anyway, I think it's overblowingly, dramatically perfect! I actually have dreams, to this very day, that I go into a record store and find an old song or album of yours that I don't have, then I wake up and realize that there's very little of anything of yours that I don't have! Well, my dream just came true!
I am so happy, and can't wait until it arrives at my doorstep! Japan is way ahead of us in recognizing what a treasure you and your talent are!
Thanks again!

AND I just discovered that all the tracks on "Ultimate Best" were given the ultimate treatment, remastered using the new K2HD technology! This is excellent, news!
* * *
The main purpose of "K2HD MASTERING" is to reproduce the charms packed in the original master sources as much as possible. It is especially effective for the reproduction of rich ambience and sound reality. Particularly it's recommended for jazz and classical music full of sound reality played by acoustic instruments.
The direction of completed sound depends on the contents of masters but as a whole, it will be with a lot of analog taste full of depth which is soft as well as with high frequency range. Therefore, it's best for mastering of old master sources.
This CD is mastered with superior skill of mastering engineer and revolutionary "K2 High Definition Coding" technology. K2HD MASTERING enhances sound spectrum to a bandwidth of 100 KHz and 24-bit resolution, while retaining all the charm of the original recording.
K2HD mastered CDs offer extended nuance, dynamics and musicality and are playable on any CD player.

Why dont they just take it one step further and discover "THE VINYL" all over again. There is no sound as good as that coming from a vinyl player.
Wonder in how many copies this cd is selling??????

Superior audio quality I suppose. (Not to mention none of the pops, clicks, or noise that become apparent on vinyl records.)

So does this mean one has to buy K2HD-cd player for that K2HD cd????????? Is it simular to the change like when Mono went Stereo, it was possible to play mono records on stereo equipments but without the stereo.
PS. I always look at hearing that "extra" noise from vinyls as a bonus......it soundes just like the noise from an indoor-fireplace I want to have but can´t afford.

Actually the Japanese pressed vinyl records have the best sound quality I have heard, even better than the so called "promotion copys" which usually where the first vinyls to come out of pressings......a must have for all vinyl lovers.
Looking forward to hear the difference.....

Several of Nanci Griffith's albums were released in the HDCD format. They sound great--whether "better" than a conventional CD format I have no idea.
I also have a Japanese release of a John Lennon collection, also mastered in 24-bit encoding. That one sounds fantastic compared to another I had. Whether due to the format or a great job of remastering I have no idea.

That K2HD sound hit me first when listening to Love Is Blind, of course, I thought, the japanese would K2HD this song exceptionally well after all it was a major hit song in Japan. Then I heard On The Other Side and I had to look twice at the songlist to be sure it was that song........and then everything as hoops says, something new each time I listen to it. Yeap no doubt about it...K2HD is earcandy stuffed with ones favorite taste.
Apart from this, the songlist is completely of my liking. It starts, (and what a beginning of a cd) with a never heard before song from the good old days:
"No you are not the first,
I have had a past......"
Today You Are Mine is a wonderful song, a gem. This is followed by Society´s Child a song so good to have in a Janis Ian compilation cd. And then there are the best 6 from the CBS early years, songs you can not but have on a cd like his.
Then from song number 9 to the last, one pure and simply steps into a perfect joyride we have among others Hooper Painting, You Are Love, On The Other Side, Some Peoples Live, Getting Over You, all the live songs and Joy.
There are 18 songs on that cd so perfectly chosen to give a good and full insight in all of Janis career as a singer, songwriter and a performer. To me it is not that usual Best Of cd, it is more then that it also stands out as a individul piece of work...it is like one is listening to a whole new solo album....and "It can´t get any better then that."
Congratulation Janis, you have done something perfect again.

hopper painting is blowing me away. the piano on this song is incredible, and on silly habits...i have to keep hitting the back button to hear it again and again, on you are love, you have to realllllly listen but the way Janis works the piano is unbelievable... I'm loving all the piano work on this CD like never before. it's just a beautifully crafted, perfectly chosen piece of work. I can;t say enough about it.

Dang, I am simply going to have to buy this album. I remember how blown away I was when I got my copy of the remastered edition of "Breaking Silence"....it sounds as if this is at least as wonderful.

And about Mimi´s song:
Hey, where has my post gone???
.........like it.....I like it. Will there be a follow up:confused: :o
A little birdie told me my copy is on the way, courtesy of some generous person whose identity I may never discover.
It’s gonna be an early Christmas at Dee’s this year that’s for sure. http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k267/deemark/Emoticons/biggrin.jpg
The first track is quite an old song, re-cut.
And it's simply beautiful. Glad the decision was made to include “Today You're Mine.”
Kathleen the CD came today. Listening to it now under my headphones and it's spectacular! Well worth the wait. The cuts have never sounded better.
Thanks Kathleen for all you do for us, and thanks again to my Secret Santa whoever you may be! The only way I can repay you is to manage the Mystery Rudie Santa game, and now I'll be keeping you in mind as I do.
I'm having problems getting a copy of Janis Ultimate Best cd.
I ordered through amazon in November. Just been told that I wont receive it till after christmas prob next year!!!
Does anyone know how I can get a copy sooner than that. Ive been really looking forward to having this cd especially after reading reviews.
Thanks
Sal

Sorry for asking this question, it was none of my buisness to do so, but I am european and to forthcoming sometimes I am told and find myself in all kinds of awkward and strange situations because of that.
Anyways, in a way I envy you because of that, it only means you have yet to discover the amazing sound on this cd and her new/old song and the choice and combination of her songs throughout her entire career up todate.

Kathleen can not only get great deals on Janis CDs/DVDs, she can also summon up flame without spark or tinder. All she needs is a piano.
Thanks for your help everyone.
I went back to amazon Mimi and cancelled my original order and reordered from the link you sent to me, the prices were better and they will arrive sooner. Great result. Hope you have your copy to enjoy very soon!

It is almost like hearing some of Janis' songs for the first time again. The sound and presence are astonishing! How do they do it?
