Legendary Irish singer Tommy Makem has died at age 74 as the result of lung cancer. Truly a great loss....he gave voice to some of the finest traditional Irish songs, more than a few "rebellion songs" among them. Bob Dylan was among those who heard those songs and came away inspired.
For me, his rendition of "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" will never be equaled. May he rest in peace, and live on in the songs he leaves behind.

.....except by Eric Bogle who wrote "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" in the first place. I have seen Eric many times.
Sorry to hear about this sad loss to Folk Music...

Yes, I've got Eric Bogle's recording of "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" as well. Trouble is that I heard Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy do it first, and have never gotten over it.

I can only imagine. Eric's pretty good with it too. Another one I love of Eric's is "Leaving Nancy". Have you heard of that???

Oh yes--Eric Bogle's recordings are, for some reason, quite difficult to find here. However, I treasure those that I have been able to acquire.
