janisian

We have just started a "links" page (under Misc). The purpose is to provide links for fans to things like old videos of me, interesting web sites about me, and in general, more me.
If you have any links you think are worthy, please send them to
webmaster@janisian.com
and thanks!
More you! More you!
Sounds like a great idea to me.

How great, Dylan! I'll get on over there and and check it out right now.
Well unfortunately after several attempts to join, I keep getting the same error message no matter what I do!
There was an error processing your request, please try again.

Up until very recently there were 2 videos of a 70's Janis singing 'At 17' on www.youtube.com. However, when I went on there today searching under Janis Ian there was just a Japanese band performing a version of the song in a jazzy way, which is not what I expected, but is interesting. Check it out:

Maybe you need to register with Myspace in order to view the page?
Maybe you need to register with Myspace in order to view the page?
Doesn't that restrict the accessibility of your site? That everyone who wants to view it must register?

Probably, and I know it isn't right.
There is nothing else promoting Janis on Myspace though and I think that's a shame. Myspace is so big with so many members it's hard to look properly. If more people can find their way to Janis and her music and writing through that page, and hopefully this site eventually, I will be pleased.
Maybe you don't even have to register. I'll have another go.

I thought that I would surf around for links to assist with the quest. There are about 806,000 hits on google for "janis ian". Despite this there is not much for a fan to get excited about in terms of content and a good deal of inaccurate information (from what I can tell with my limited knowledge). Just a thought. There seem to be an awful lot of contributors here. Would it be feasible to start a site for fans to link to outside of the main site. This could be a space for people to post their concert and personal photos, scans of memorabilia, thoughts, poetry, memories, and other "fan" stuff. I guess it could be like a teenagers bedroom wall (my daughter's if you please). You wouldn't want all that clutter on your living room wall when company comes over but it sure does look cool on the teen's wall. The "Janis Ian" site would then be able to continue it's clean and professional appearance (albeit welcoming and interesting) and the fan site could be the mess of stuff that doesn't fit into the living room. I don't know cause I'm new here... and sometimes kinda opinionated... now questioning.... becoming anxious.... have I overstepped... will I now be shunned... oh horrors. Canadians have a real lack of self worth.

Steph,
I think that pics, memorabilia, thoughts, poetry, memories, and other "fan" stuff are already allowed here in their proper context, and proper forum. That's why we have the Insert Image option when posting.
The only things to keep in mind are covered in the FAQ (http://www.janisian.com/forum/faq.php?faq=faq_mbrules#faq_faq_3mbs) section.

Dee,
Yep, you are right. You can post all of this stuff here in the forum. I guess I just pictured sometihing a bit less like the bulletin board system. Speaking as an easily bored "surfer" sometimes I just want the eye candy and don't want to surf through headings and pages of discussion to get to things that I find interesting. Did that make sense? I mean, the main website I assume is to promote Janis Ian not really to be a fan contribution base - or perhaps I missed the point. A fan page that accepted contributions (IE whole pages of information, pictures) would be something quite different. But then what the heck do I know? I'm just a Canadian LOL.
Steph
Steph,
Although the Janis Ian message board is years old, this current message forums system is rather new, as is the ability to post things like active links and photos. Maybe what you are looking for is more like a strictly Janis Ian information site. If it's only Janis Ian info you're interested in, there is tons of that (articles, lyrics, newsletters and more) on the home page (http://janisian.com/).
Part of the community we've built here allows for fan contributions. I'm not exactly clear on why you find that a problem tho. But really we're going off topic, since this thread is about other existing Janis-related Web sites.
You can disable some of the "extras" in your User CP settings if you like:
Visible Post Elements
You have the option to show or hide various elements of messages, which may be of use to users on slow internet connections, or who want to remove extraneous clutter from posts.
[ ] Show Signatures
[ ] Show Avatars
[ ] Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)
You might also try playing with the Thread Display Mode options. I find using Linear Mode (Oldest First) lists topics the clearest.

Dee, apparently I'm not getting myself across at all and my idea is misunderstood as suggesting a change or alteration or duplcation of existing services. I don't have a problem with the forum style on this site at all and never said that I did. I was discussing the request for links and simply creating a page or site. Thought it might be fun. I think that I will simply let the idea go because it appears to be creating some confusion... and I'm just new here anyway so what do I know about it, right? Good luck with the gathering of links.
