40 years ago Homosexuality was decriminalised in the UK. That was 10 years after the Wolfenden Report, a government sponsored study, recommended the decriminalisation in 1957.
Channel 4, a national tv station here in the UK, has arranged a series of documentaries and dramas to celebrate the event, and they are being screened this week.
I cannot praise Channel 4 enough- last night they showed a docu-drama about a famous trial in 1953- the year of the Queen's coronation, when a number of men, some of whom were in public office, stood up in court and proudly admitted being gay. There were interviews with 80 and 90 year old men, who spoke about the danger of being gay in the 50s. One couple had been together for 48 years, and celebrated their civil partnership in 2006 when gay marriage became legally recognised here. That was moving in the extreme.
I hope they are also going to give a voice to Lesbians, as we have all suffered the same prejudice, but I have to say I am going to be glued to my tv set tonight at 10pm for a drama that sounds very compelling.
