Update (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19869154/): 1 hour, 17 minutes ago
SAN FRANCISCO - An earthquake jolted San Francisco Bay area residents awake early Friday, breaking glass and rattling nerves, although there were no immediate reports of injuries.
The earthquake was recorded about 2 miles east of Oakland and had a preliminary magnitude of 4.2, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It could be felt for up to 10 seconds on both sides of the San Francisco Bay after striking shortly after 4:40 a.m.
More than 1,000 customers in the Oakland area lost power, a Pacific Gas & Electric Co. spokesman said. Crews were investigating the outages.
A dispatcher at the Oakland Police Department said police were getting calls about alarms going off. In Berkeley, an employee at a Safeway grocery store said two large windows broke but there were no injuries.
Thanks for the concern gang! and i'm so glad I decided to check in.
funny thing is the only reason the computer is on at home this morning is because as soon as Peggy got up she turned it on to check what the shake registered as and where it originated.
So I decided to stop in here while she was in the shower.
4.2 sounds a lot worse than it is BELIEVE me. It hit at 4:40, we were in bed, I was sort of drowsing, since I usually get up by then, but was snoozing. There was a definite shake and a bit of a boom, enough for me to squeak and jump and Peggy to wake up to grab me. But it was over pretty quickly and nothing at all moved. The epicenter was about two miles from where we live which is probably why we felt it so much.
CNN always magnifies things WAY worse than they are. Now I better call my Dad because I'm sure he's watching the clock from Chicago waiting for it to be a decent time to call me to check in.
Love you guys!! PS.... the reason I wasn't getting up with my usual vim and vigor is because I have an ice cream hangover. Had dinner last night with Bat and family and since I didnt' get to pick the meal restaurant I felt compelled to pick the dessert place. :D It was a popular idea. heh heh
Fentons.com go see what I mean.

Glad you gals are ok out there! Thanks for letting us know.
I know the news has to blow everything up to make it seem more exciting - but always worth checking on fellow Rudies.
Ice cream hangover, huh? Never had one of those, but I can relate in terms of morning-after-buffalo-wings... ouch!
Glad the quake didn't 'rattle' you!
Peace,
BGG

I just called "Bat" a while ago and she didn't even know about the quake. She's in the "south bay" right now, I guess. Imagine if it had hit last night while y'all were at dinner!
Glad you're alright. I remember those quakes from when I lived there. 3 in particular. I never got used to them and don't miss them at all!!!

It's good that you are all OK... Amazing that there were no injuries reported as a result of this quake!
Glad ya'll are ok.. A little 4.2 didn't have me too worried though but i am glad you all checked in.
What Redjack said.
4.2 is "small" compared to the 6.1 that happened in Japan recently. Of course, to people caught in the midst of any earthquake, it's not small enough.
I was in San Diego (just arrived and settling down) when the 'quake of '89 happened. That night, my phone rang at about 2 or 3 a.m. and it was my sister asking if I was alright, they'd heard about the 'quake and the Golden Gate Bridge collapsing. I told her it wasn't the GG Bridge but Bay Bridge. But to a lot Chinese, San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Golden Gate Bridge is San Francisco. Sorry for digressing ...
On another note, I'm currently reading Isabel Allende's The House of Spirits and just finished the portion where the earthquake happened. What a magnificent description! With Allende, I'm not sure if it's her or her translator who's good. I wish I can read her books in the original Spanish!
