View Full Version : Why was I under the illusion that there was a 'Restless Eyes' thread?

Having just murdered my 'new' CD (almost) beyond the point of no return, I thought a thread of this nature was called for in order to discuss the music. This is ONE CD that I really don't know how I managed without before now and won't be parted from ever again. Before a couple of days ago I only had a (poor quality) home made tape of it.
I keep coming back to "Get Ready to Roll" for some strange reason, and can't put the song down for more than about 5 minutes without wanting to hear it again and again and again. I did that, and last time the batteries ran out before I was ready to switch it off!!! Dear Billy is another one of my favourites on this CD.....

Although it was Janis' last recording for Columbia Records, I thought it was a fine work. It displayed various musical genres and some great pop songs -- the radio-friendly "Under The Covers", "I Remember Yesterday" and "Get Ready To Roll", the jazzy "I Believe I'm Myself Again", the country-tinged "Sugar Mountain", the lyrically weaving "Passion Play", the poignant title track "Restless Eyes", probably the best song written about living with compromises, the prophetic "Bigger Than Real", and the heartbreaking "Dear Billy" and "Down And Away". A must have piece of work for Janis Ian fans.

Jim, with this CD now in my ever-growing Janis collection, I am happy. Some of the songs on her other CDs took hard work to listen to at first but THIS one eased itself into my life gently and it stuck. There is not a song on it I don't like As a rule I'm not into much Jazz or Country. Janis's Jazz and Country on the other hand is starting to change all that in that if it's Jazz I don't (as a rule) like it. Janis's Jazz on the other hand is wonderful, and likewise with Country. it's the same with "My Tennessee Hills" on Billie's Bones. I can LIVE with all that, and that is just such a plus for Janis, as she makes it all likeable :)

Not really murdered, Andrea, but I was listening to it all day yesterday, putting it on random selection because I can't fault this Album. There is NOTHING I don't like on this CD :) and that is not true with all artists as there was only one track I like on the new Prince CD :p

Ah.....PASSION PLAY.......this song amazes me.....I love the lyrics......one of my alltime favorites too, Kathleen.....and after hearing it all these years I still wonder how Janis came up with such prolific and poetical lyrics.......

True.."Passion Play" has incredible lyrics...
"Suddenly rootless
Fashionably useless
Magically fruitless and tame
Like some Sunday scholar
Who lives off the squalor
Of yesterday's knowledge and fame".

I always wanted to ask Janis to give us the skinny on how she wrote this and what was going on in her life at that time.........:o
