Barbra S. played Dublin last night. A new venue, Castletown House - outdoors; in the mud and rain. (We have had 39 days of rain here; worst Summer since 1952.) She was wonderful - such a unique talent and so remarkable for 65years. As she arrived on stage, carrying a large umbrella, a full arc rainbow appeared as a backdrop to the stage. The crowd were shouting at her to look at it but it took a while for her to realise what they were saying, when she did, she remarked that it would bring us luck and it did; it barely rained again all night.
It was the most expensive concert ever held in Ireland with tickets ranging from 120 euro to 550. But heck it's a once in a lifetime opportunity. We paid 267 each and had marvellous seats. There were all sorts of logistical problems that the promoters are getting a lot of heat for. But Barbra, was very gracious, for us, as she put it, "schlepping in the mud" to see her. There is only one other lady I have ever schlepped in the mud to see (Janis; Philly Folk Festival) and methinks my schleppin' in mud days are over!
As we joined in on one of the songs, Barbra said, "I hope you are recording this, these guys are good" and I thought of Janis who always remarks how good the Irish audiences are at singing in tune. But then they are both troopers who know how to schmooze a crowd.
And no, in spite of the fact that I enjoyed it very much, it was not as good as a Janis Ian concert when she is in top form and much as I admire BS, she doesn't move me the way Janis does. To each his own.
And PS: She played the piano for a bit - she needs to stick to the singing and acting. It was the only bad bit of the night!
