Oregon hospital finds 12 nails in skull of man complaining of headache

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon man who went to a hospital complaining of a headache was found to have 12 nails embedded in his skull from a suicide attempt with a nail gun, doctors said.

Surgeons removed the nails with needle-nosed pliers and a drill and the man survived with no serious lasting effects, said a report on the medical oddity in the current issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery. The unidentified 33-year-old man was suicidal and high on methamphetamine last year when he fired the nails into his head.

The nails were not visible when doctors first examined the man in the emergency room of an unidentified Oregon hospital a day later. Doctors were surprised when X-rays revealed six nails clustered between his right eye and ear, two below his right ear and four on the left side of his head.

No one before is known to have survived after intentionally firing so many foreign objects into the head, said the report, written by Dr. G. Alexander West, the neurosurgeon who oversaw the treatment of the patient.

The man at first told doctors he had had a nail gun accident but later admitted it was a suicide attempt.

The nails came close to major blood vessels and the brain stem but did not pierce them. The patient was in remarkably good condition when he was transferred to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, where the nails were removed.

The patient was later transferred to psychiatric care and stayed under court order for nearly a month before leaving against doctors' orders.

Thats it!!!!!!I'm calling for immediate legislation of mandatory nail gun registration... Lets act now before gangs of roving carpenters start wandering our cities building things!!! These abuses need to end now. Personally I think this downhill spiraling effect on our civilization is directly attributable to those "rabble rousers" Peter, Paul & Mary for writing that gang song "If I had a hammer". I for one tremble when I walk past construction sites. Let Freedom ring by all means but ban nail guns and hammers.... Ands again the quote takes on refreshed meaning.... "When nail guns and hammers are outlawed... Only Outlaws will have nail guns and hammers". Times like this call for stocking up on duct tape for civil defense...

Best to all

I should think that would upgrade him from head ache to head splitting agony!

When I read that he had made this suicide attempt last year I thought "So did he FORGET that he had pounded 12 nails into his head?" You'd think it would come up on conversation at some point within a year....

I saw this on the news last night, complete with x-rays. I was glad my dinner was well-digested!

According to our local news commentator, "this couldn't have been accidental." hmm.... Ya THINK!!?

I guess some of us just have stronger survival instincts than others.

well dang, if 12 nails in the head don't kill ya...maybe your just too stupid to die. I'm just kidding, this man obviosly put a lot of thought into his drunken stupor, that is usually about the time that a suicidal person will forget that he wants to die and do soething like this just to" see what happens"...again I'm just kidding. dang he has no serious injuries, God Bless him...oh can't i just say one more thing. He goes a YEAR without anyone knowing he has nails IN HIS HEAD, i ACCIDENTLY take 3 or four to many tylenol ( or six or 15 i don't remember i was in a lot of pain ) and end up in the psych ward for thw 12th time and with a permanantly damaged liver...wha!!!??? i mean if i was gonna try to off myself tylenol would be the LAST ( well second to last now) thing that came to mind.
sheeeshhhhhhhhhhhhh!

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Believing they had a botched burglary on their hands, police in Hayward, California, called to a house instead found a naked man wedged in its chimney, a police officer said Monday.

"He didn't have a stitch on," Lt. Gary Branson of the Hayward Police Department said, referring to Michael Urbano.

The 23-year-old man came home early Saturday morning and, finding himself locked out and without his keys, tried to enter the single-story house through its chimney.

"He told us he took off his clothes because as he was going down the chimney the clothes would rub up against it and slow him down," Branson said. "If it was skin on cement he felt he would go down easier."

Urbano's effort ended disastrously when a cable-television wire he used to lower himself snapped. He fell and was wedged in a section of the chimney tapering into the home's fireplace.

For the next four hours he cried out for help. A neighbor called police and fire fighters, who dislodged Urbano, Branson said. Officers booked Urbano for being under the influence of drugs, he added.
