I am TOTALLY smitten with "The Great Divide" off of FITNB. I have been playing it repeatedly in the car on the way to and from work every day. (8 plays from Fairhaven to Suitland, MD).
The instrumentals are gorgeous, the lyrics transcendent, and Janis's vocals make it an absolute masterpiece. She sings with such conviction, but it is understated, not strident like the vast majority of other folk songs of that genre. Every time I listen to it, it just increases my sense of awe at her amazing talent. As Janis herself has said, her songs are more sociological than political. This song just stirs my soul. If I possessed a fraction of the talent she has, I could do a better job at articulating my appreciation for this incredible work and remarkable lady.
