My wife studied at The University Of Guelph in Canada and went with a friend to Ottawa, she told me that there are a lot of canals there, a lot like Amsterdam. She found it to be a very beautyful city.

HAMSTER LAND

based on Amsterdam
by (Janis Ian/Buddy Mondlock)

JUST THE PATTER OF FEET ON THE SAWDUST
JUST A FLASH OF AN EYE THROUGH THE CAGE RAILS
JUST A FURRY LI'L RODENT I REMEMBER
HAMSTER LAND

JUST THE SQUEAK OF A WHEEL AS IT'S SPINNING
JUST THE CHOMPING OF CARROTS AND LETTUCE
JUST THE SUNFLOWER SEEDS ON THE CARPET
HAMSTER LAND

I REMEMBER YOUR FUR AND YOUR BEADY LI'L EYES
AND THE SCRATCH OF YOUR NAILS AND YOUR NIBBLES AND BITES
I CRIED … YOU BITE!

JUST THE SCENT OF YOUR URINE AND POOPIES
JUST THE PRESENTS YOU PLOPPED ON MY PILLOW
JUST THE WAY THAT YOU GAZED OUT THE WINDOW
HAMSTER LAND

JUST A GHOST WHEN I OPENED YOUR CAGE DOOR
JUST A SCAMPERING MOTION ‘ROUND THE CORNER
JUST A SCREAM AS YOU RAN ‘CROSS MY SHOULDER
HAMSTER LAND

I REMEMBER YOUR FUR AND YOUR BEADY LI'L EYES
AND THE SCRATCH OF YOUR NAILS AND YOUR NIBBLES AND BITES
I CRIED … YOU BITE!

JUST TWO HAMSTERS ASLEEP IN THE SILENCE
AS I WALK FROM THE DOOR
JUST THE BIRTH OF A QUINTUPLET LITTER
PLEASE! NO MORE!

I REMEMBER YOUR FUR AND YOUR BEADY LI'L EYES
AND THE SCRATCH OF YOUR NAILS AND YOUR NIBBLES AND BITES
I CRIED … YOU BITE! YOU BITE! … GOODBYE GOODBYE, GOODBYE . . . .

I really like this one, Dee. Thank you for posting it again.

And it also makes me miss the hamsters I once had. They were named "Frits" (I live in a street that is called after a Dutch worldwar 2 resistancehero. His first name was Frits) and my hamster after Frits was called "Pici". Which is Hungarian for something like 'tiny' or 'very small'.

They were such sweet, furry little creatures and they never bit me. Well, Frits did once or twice when he got very old. He lost his eyesight (and probably his sense of smell) for a big part and must have thought my finger was a carrot or something. But he never bit me on purpose, even though he was a very grumpy character. :)

Oh no.....you rascal you...........after reading this there came so much water out of my eyes (from laughing) that my computer had a short circuit....and yes I sang along with your lyrics

I drove to the shop and burst into laughter every now and then, when thinking about your lyrics.

Do you know how hard it is to drive with your eyes soaked in tears.

By jolly you are good.

But do you know what you have caused?

The rest is for your eyes only, Janis:

Janis, I was hoping Amsterdam would be on your set list in Amsterdam, now I ask you........please don´t............But if it will be on your set list.............please accept my apology, I will be the one laughing my head off in Die Kleine Komedie Theater thinking..............Hamsterland.............

I´m so sorry but I don´t think it can be avoided.............please don´t blame me when you hear me laughing.........blame.............Dee.

Sorry Gisli, but it's all YOUR fault! LOL :D

Eva,

I was telling David earlier that I once had hamsters too - the memories of which added a lot to the words of Hampster Land. Good memories and not so good. Yes, mine did occasionally bite when I took them out to clean their cage. They would also pee in your hand if startled.

"JUST THE CHOMPING OF CARROTS AND LETTUCE" (itty bitty chomping) and "SUNFLOWER SEEDS ON THE CARPET" was also true.
