'Top Ten Spammer' Arrested In US
Updated: 09:42, Thursday May 31, 2007

Computer users could see a big fall in junk e-mail after police said they arrested one of the world's most prolific spammers.

Junk e-mails may now fall. Robert Soloway is accused of sending out millions of rogue messages using networks of compromised "zombie" computers.

They are called "zombies" because owners normally have no idea their machines have been infected.

Soloway's arrest comes after a federal grand jury last week indicted him on 35 counts.

He is accused of mail fraud, wire fraud, e-mail fraud, aggravated identity theft and money laundering.

The 27-year-old, whose four bank accounts were seized by the US government, has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Authorities said computer users across the internet could notice a fall in the amount of spam they get.

Prosecutors say Soloway used computers infected with malicious code to send out millions of junk e-mails since 2003.

Microsoft lawyer Tim Cranton said: "He's one of the top 10 spammers in the world.

"He's a huge problem for our customers. This is a very good day."
