Amsterdam airport's new 'X-ray' security scan reveals all
AMSTERDAM (AFP) - Amsterdam's Schiphol airport Tuesday introduced a new security scan that sees through clothes, the first airport in the world to use the system, officials said.
The scan outlines body contours, making it easy for security personnel to see if anyone is carrying weapons or smuggling money or drugs.
Airport authorities said the scan was quicker and better than body searches.
To ensure privacy, the images from the scan are analysed by a security attendant in a separate room. The face of the person is also blurred to avoid ecognition.
Schiphol put two such scanning machines into operation Tuesday and another 15 are set to follow. For the present, passengers can choose between the body scan or regular controls, which sometimes include being frisked.

Just imagining all these hapless tourists finding photos of their bodies on web sites with celebrity heads grafted on via Photoshop. Mark my words, someone will find a way to make money out of this.

I actually ordered a pair of those. All they gave you was a headache...much like the 3D glasses they handed out at "Jaws 3"...

Now why am I not surprised? ;)

Speaking of 3-D glasses, if you have an old pair of red/green ones hanging around, here is a great site to use them on, and the regular pictures are wonderful, too....Hubble sites, mostly, and shots from satellites and roamers like Cassini from outer space on the way to somewhere. I manage to look every day, something wonderful is there.

I located an electronic surplus place that has the old projector attachments for 3D movies....have been trying to figure out how to fit one to a camera for dual use.
I have a c. 1950s stereo camera which is an absolute delight and long dreamed of putting together a book of 3D nature photos. Alas, the associated printing problems put an end to that idea.
Perhaps I'll being the camera to Pittsburgh in 2008. Rudies--in 3D. It could work....

Rudies look well in every dimension. :D

Go stare at the middle of this circle and within mere seconds you will see a big Buddha coming at ya! Most spooky indeed.

Wow Dee that was cool. I really thought after the third time it was a trick.
Laughing,

If you have two roughly equivalent eyes, you will see a "sausage" floating in front of you in mid air by following these steps:
1. Hold your hands about 7 inches in front of you at eye level.
2. Slowly push your index fingers toward each other.
3. Now look “through” your fingers, into the distance behind them.
The sausage should appear now, and you can change its length by varying the distance between the finger tips. For most observers, the sausage will look blurred, at least initially. If you try to look at the sausage, it will disappear, it is only present if you look at something more distant than your fingers. It helps if the background is rather homogenous and has a colour very different from your fingers.

Is this turning into an optical illusion thread....boy, how I LOVE optical illusions :)
My favorites are the ultimate 'hidden pictures'--stereograms. Unfortunately, it takes two good eyes to see them, one won't do, since viewing them is based on our built in 3-D binocular vision. If you can see them they are fun!
The trick is to look deep into the picture, about 3-6 inches beyond the surface, like looking at the bottom of a full pool. You will eventually bring into focus the hidden picture.

I have had cataract surgery and wear bifocals and I can still see them. I have found that if I strain my eyes and not move them around until I see the picture It is great! So give it a try and don't give up.

Jerry Andrus, magician, eccentric, and generally interesting fellow (jerryandrus.org) has made a career of creating optical illusions that are astonishingly "real". Check out his "impossible crate" for a classic, and there are many more.
