View Full Version : Hey... Ummm... Just Stress

Seems like it's a losing year for health.

My sister ended up going to the doctor's after the nurse... something... at her school found that she had a heart murmur. Then she went to the doctor and it was discovered she also has shingles.

Not contagious, so I'm not worried about my health once I get to see her, and heart murmurs are not normally serious. It's just... weird to think it went undetected all these years.

So, I'm worried about her since she is under quite a bit of stress, and has not told her teachers and so is still getting hammered by finals.

I'm also getting hammered by finals, but it's not the same.

Also, being twins that are likely identical (yes, we're unsure whether we're identical or not... how odd is that...) it means I may have a heart murmur as well. That would be one way to confirm if we were identical... But personally not my favorite way.

Since I'm not currently playing sports there has been no reason for me to go to the doctor, and so it is unlikely I will find out any time soon.

Just weird feeling...

When it comes to health one is never too careful. So sorry to hear about your sister and sending good vibes to you and her.
Hope that all of this does not distract you much from prepairing for the finals, and that you can control the stress that must be amble enough on you these days.

Thanks for sharing this and keep us updated.......more then less. Take good care of you.

I think you needn't be concerned, Song. I had shingles (around my side) once and yes, they proved very painful - however I was told it was basically a condition akin to adult chicken pox without being contageous. I would encourage her to take Neurontin (sp?) as it helps heal the nerve endings faster and thus lessen a risk for problems later down the line.
As to the heart murmur - of course anything with the heart is not to be taken lightly, but my mid-50's brother has had the condition since birth and has always done remarkably well.

Song, my mitral valve prolapse (also a type of "heart murmur") wasn't found and diagnosed until I was in my 30's. When I asked the doctor why it had never been noticed, he said "More age... more stress... more caffeine... less exercise..." They're usually no big deal, especially these days.

I too had a heart murmer when I was a child. It came to nothing, and look at me now :D (maybe you don't want to though!!! )

Thanks everyone. I know in my head a heart murmur is nothing to worry about. But worries never were all that logical in the first place. Caroline is fine, still stressed from finals, but we all are. I can't say we're any different from any other college students around. It just seems that everything happens at once because first we get stressed, then we get sick.

It probably is too much to ask for everything to ask one piece at a time, and most of the time I would probably consider it to be boring, everything taking up its own slot in time. However this is one of those times that I don't think I would mind...

Thank you.

I had a heart murmur when I was younger and just grew out of it--apparently that happens sometimes. Anyway, it never slowed me down. At least no more than other things have at times.

Song, My fraternal, boy-girl twins also had murmurs "VSD"'s which means they have a hole between the left and right ventricles (Sp) of their hearts and their blood never gets completely cleaned. They are twenty-six now and have never had any trouble except taking antibodies before dental cleanings. I have never understand why, even though they explained to me over and over. I know it makes some sense to me but it sounds like there are a lot more things that could contaminate their blood. Good luck and rudie vibes coming to both of you.
Peace,
Darlene

Find some quiet time - even a minute - and think good thoughts.
