Well this is what I was doing today, ringing and attending the events laid on for us in Edinburgh (except the big posh dinner which I couldn't afford) Here is my Certificate which all existing SACR members get. Lots of Quarter Peals promised for later on this year.

This is the badge I'm entitled to wear on my jacket :)
and the article from the Ringing World about the restoration of St Andrew's and St George's bells which was the latest successfully completed project.

Quite a lovely affair! Congrats to you and all your fellow ringers! I hope you went to the dinner, whether you could afford it or not--it's not every day that an association reaches such an advanced age!

Bat, not everyone went. But there will be something more affordable in Dunkeld in October 20th. This might be more "my sort of thing" but given the higher rainfall statistics I might get rather wet!!!!! :)

Congatulations to you all, Annabel :)
Thanks, David. I'm not involved with the peal at St Andrew's and St George's today or the quarter peal tomorrow, but I'll have plenty of reasons to ring those later on in the year :)
I thought I was going to get away with just a plain course of Grandsire Triples (treble) today, but Mike Clay wanted a Touch, so a Touch we rang. I have now developed a "loving relationship" with the 2nd at St A&G which is very lightly set and therefore an awkward bell unless you're able to compensate for it's idiosyncrasies  More ringing tomorrow :)

Annabel, that is so cool about your involvement with the SACR and bell ringing. I didn't realize it's so complicated. My aunt, who has been to Scotland, would be interested to hear about St Andrews and your bell ringing.
You sent me off on a tangent, looking up some of my relatives, as my great-grandmother was from Scotland. She married an Englishman but I don't know if it was over there or in the US. She belonged to the Skene clan. Lovely tartan. They were Highlanders from Aberdeenshire so I was wondering if that feud still existed between the Highlanders and the Lowlanders?
Another piece of trivia from my life-Do you know that I lived for a year in the Bell Capital of the US? Yup, East Hamptom, Ct, though I didn't know it at the tme.
Oh yes one more piece of trivia. I found my great grandfather's obituary. And in 1930 it wasn't tbe obituary section of the newspaper. In big letters at the top of the page was Necrology.

Roady, I missed a practice last Monday, as I was in Stirling and when I came back to the Bells on Friday I had forgotten how to ring them! The 3rd started to come down on me and that was scary in itself.
There's one other thing you should know, and that is that I was born in London, and didn't come to Scotland until I was 16, and although I have lived in Scotland for most of my life, none of my other brothers, neices or nephews have.
I have posted links on my first post, and I'll try and find some more for you. :) My actual tower is St Cuthbert's and I learned at St Mary's (until I had an accident three years ago. See elsewhere on the Board for details, and I'll come back and post that link  )

I've still got more to add to that as that thread is now about safety in the bell tower :p

Annabel,
Thanks for the links!. Those bells look bigger than people! How big are they?
I'm going to give my Aunt one of my old computers (if she'll use it) so I can refer her to some links. Hey I forgot her church is St Andrew's also but rather tiny compared to yours. ;) It's in Edgartown, MA. http://www.capecodphotoalbum.com/standrewsep.jpg

Roady, what a sweet little church. The Tenor is 14 and three quarter cwt. I've rung it, but with the long draft and no rope guide til the end of May I'm abit sceptical still. The bells however, have loads of character (the 2nd is so lightly set you have to adjust your pull and stroke accordingly to compensate) but learners still have difficulty. With the booksale under way until the 3rd Friday in May, there will be no ringing there now until the Sunday, but practices have been moved to St Cuthberts for the next two weeks and that should benefit the learners. I just hope I don't forget how to ring them
