View Full Version : What a name can do!
Has that ever happened to one of you, that you heard only the name of a musician or singer and wanted or not wanted to listen to him?
When Janis mentioned (and recommended) Belgian singer songwriter Sarah Bettens in her last update I downloaded her solo debut the next day.
But Janis had to write mention Gretchen Peters several times til I finally listened to this singer... it must have been her name that made me think of the female character in Goethe's drama "Faust" that I've never liked since my school days. For German ears name is a synonyme for a naive girl...
Sorry, Gretchen Peters! Your music is wonderful, Janis was right agin!

i think all of us have heard the expression "if it's too loud, you're too old" hmm well i've had to really study this over the last week or so. being schizo with auditory hallucinations makes one want to hear less and less back ground noise. Janis mentioned a new artist that she just loves somebody Bettens, i went out and bought one of her cds. i put it in the cd player in my car and DANG THAT GIRL IS LOUD! well not all loud, and her music is surprisingly happy for the most part and i truely dig her song "scream" for a lot of really good reasons, but i find it hard to listen to her sometimes because she has so much backup going on. it's funny cause a friend of mine had to point it out to me kinda with other senses , like i don;t drink or use drugs and never have, i always said it was because i want to be lucid when i have a good time, but the truth is because being in an altered state has never been a good thing for me, my mind plays serious games on it's own, the fear of what a substance could do is not inviting. so i'll never be too old but it might sometimes be too loud. that , i believe, is another reason why i love Janis' music so much, she may have a lot going on in a song, but is is all done so well and each piece has it's part, it makes sense to my brain. just thought i'd share

Don't feel bad. I've been avoiding Mercedes Lackey because the first friend that recommended her to me did something that I thought was extremely rude and when I tried to bring him to terms on it he just ignored me and banned me from his site (the thing I found to be rude was that he had Lackey's work, and the work of a few artists, on the pages without permission... and one of the artist's work he had claimed as his own), which I found to be the equivalent of a three-year-old sticking their fingers in their ears and going "la la la" so they don't hear you. And so after that I was avoiding one of the most popular fantasy writers out there even though I had ample opportunity to read her work and she does have *gasp* extensive work on dragons.
I suppose if you can get by a name I surely can get past a grudge that certainly shouldn't be held against the author (I'm also running out of books, so it's certainly a good time to give up foolishness) after several years of having not spoken to that person.

Janis mentioned Bette Midler last year, and I STILL haven't found any of her music  I only remember her out of that film "Hocus Pocus" which I absolutely loved at the time :p :o

I hope i didn;t mislead. i truly enjoy Sarah Betten's work ( especially track # 7 :) ). i just can't take loud, it's hard on my soul. i haven;t looked for gretchen yet, but seeing how i enjoyed Sarah so much, (did i mention that she has a very sexy voice?), i'm sure i will. Bette Midler has a fantastic voice, her work in the film " the rose" is heart wrenching, she is talented from her toes all the way out her ears. i don't kow that she has ever written a song or if she plays an instrument but it really doesn;t matter, she is fast and funny and extrememly quick witted. i can;t remember the name of the show she did completely made up as a mermaid and wheeling herself in a wheelchair ( cause mermaids can't walk)
annabel, i'm sure you have heard her music...have you seen the film beaches? oh there are so many of her songs that make it to pop radio. i just wish there was more time to discover all the great artists out there.

I like Bette Midler overall, but have never quite forgiven her for her overblown renditions of "Wind Beneath My Wings" and "From A Distance" (indeed, she altered the entire sentiment of the latter song with her arrangement). Can't even remember who wrote and originally recorded "Wind....", but I've never heard "From A Distance" done better than it was by the composer, Julie Gold, and by Nanci Griffith.
