Saxman, I can't speak for Janis obviously...but I think Janis moved to Nashville to surround herself with the writing community. And of course Pat :)
I think Janis also wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of a huge city. Janis. Correct me if i'm wrong?

Mike, Mike, Mike...
Well not to start a rumor but..... I've heard tell (From REDJACK) that Janis moved to Nashville to start a religious cult called the "Rudies" that travel the nation in a school bus. It's even been said that some of them have covered the globe and are starting charters all over the world...
:o
Best to you and yours.... Say Hi to Lonnye for us...

Janis once said in an interview that Nashville gave her a home when she was homeless -- probably both emotionally and creatively. I'm just glad she's only two hours away.

And don't forget there's some mighty good BBQ in the Nashville area! Thats reason enough for me.
Janis Ian in conversation with John R. Killacky at the Association of
Performing Arts Presenters’ conference, New York City, January 22, 2006
John: You grew up around New York, lived in California, and you wind
up in Nashville. Even though you’ve got great boots on, girl, how did you wind
up in Nashville?
Janis: In 1986 I was wiped out, I had to make a living. I had no recourse,
so I signed a publishing contract with MCA. Lee Levy, who was heading the
company, thought if he could put together my depth with another writer’s
commerciality, he mighty get something very interesting. Since Nashville at the
time was the most commercial place in the country, just in terms of getting covers,
they sent me to Nashville for two weeks. And it was the damnedest thing, John. I
never felt like this anywhere else. My foot hit the tarmac and I thought, “I’m
home”. I knew nothing about Nashville. I knew next to nothing about country
music. I mean, I’d grown up on the music of Hank Williams and Jimmy Reeves,
but not beyond that. I felt at home the moment I got there. I spent five years in
culture shock because it really is moving to another country, but Nashville was
very good to me. They were very proud that I moved there. The songwriting
community didn’t look at what I was doing now; they looked at what I had done.
They’re still like that. They look at the body of your work, not your current status.
I was fortunate to move there at a time when all those other LA people
hadn’t moved there yet, because about 10 years ago, 50,000 people moved to
Nashville in one year with their families to make their living in our music industry
and the general attitude they brought was “We’ll show you how to make real
records.” You can imagine how that endeared them.
I felt at home there and I always felt at home there. Now, of course, I’ve
been with my partner for 17 years. She has a law practice there; my grandchildren
are there, so I am pretty much stuck there until I die.
Sorry, I forgot to give you the website with the full length (17 pages) text of the interview: www.sff.org/about/documents/Janis_Ian_interview.pdf
