Vince Gill Serenaded for 50th Birthday

Some of Nashville's finest songwriters sang their classics at Vince Gill's 50th birthday party Thursday (April 12) at his home in Nashville. Performing on a backyard stage sheltered by a large tent, Thom Schuyler kicked off the event with his affectionate homage to Music City composers, "16th Avenue." Don Schlitz reprised his mythic "The Gambler." Janis Ian rolled back the calendar to 1975 with "At Seventeen." Rodney Crowell sang "'Til I Gain Control Again." The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Jeff Hanna favored the crowd with his rendition of Jerry Jeff Walker's "Mr. Bojangles." Others who took their turns at the microphone included wife Amy Grant, daughter Jenny Gill, Leslie Satcher, Al Anderson, Fred Knobloch, Beth Nielsen Chapman and Gill himself. Also spotted in the crowd were Bill Anderson, Del McCoury, songwriter Matraca Berg, guitarist Pete Huttlinger and music executives Bruce Hinton, Tony Brown and James Stroud.

Gosh, I wish Janis would have sung "At Seventeen." for my 50th Birthday. Oops, know I remember she did at my LRC!

Dee, you are so right...
Actually, I first met Vince around 19847 and Amy right around then too. I was fortunate enough to be having breakfast with Don Schlitz when they wandered into the deli and invited me.
It was a grand night. I've been feeling very disconnected because I've been out of town so much, and I got to catch up with an enormous amount of old friends and acquaintances I haven't seen in a decade. Vince was as amazingly humble as ever. All he'd wnted for his birthday was a gathering of friends, and to be a sideman. So he played on every song.

What the article didn't mention was that in the middle of a song, Bekka Bramlett called me up on stage to sit in her lap (!!) and do a duet. We ended up singing a pretty powerful extemperaneous version of "Since I Fell for You". The most fun I've had on stage in a while.

As to the lap, there were no more chairs...
