View Full Version : What Should Janis Call Her Autobiography?

Azure

It's got to have a title! Maybe we could inspire her to start writing and stop researching if we come up with a good working title for her book. :D

I nominate Society's Child.

Ya beat me to it, DaveM! Could call it "More Me (is Always a Good Thing!)"

Anna from Dublin

I think "More Me" implies a 2nd volume! As if there was "Me" and then "More Me".

I really like the idea of Me: Vol. 1 and More Me: Vol. 2. Isn't that what Janis sings about in 'My Autobiography?' :) Cheers, all.

....and if there were to be a Volume 3 :p she could call that one Even More Me or Yet More Me :D I really love that idea as well :)

Well, since we're working off of old song or album titles...I really like "This Train Still Runs". The fact that Janis has been so prolific and engaged in her art for so long always amazes me...and she just keeps getting better and better. :)

If there are juicy tidbits in it, I would go with, "The Secret Life of J. Eddy Fink".

I agree with "This Train Still Runs." It does capture something about where Janis is at.

...but then again, "Vague Obscenities" might attract a lot of readers!:p

Randy! LOL!!!

Those all sound like wonderful title suggestions... I think one of the chapters should be "At Seventeen". I'm not sure about the whole book... "Me" and "More Me" sounds great, but I don't want her off the stage that long!

I think giving the chapters song titles would be pretty cool. Given Janis' prolific output, there has to be one to fit everything.

Perhaps "Released" could be the title.

Or how about the obvious: "Rude Girl"?

(Janis, you're not taking any of this seriously, are you? Get back to cleaning!)

But we know Vol 3 won't be for afew years yet. :D

"There and back again. A Hobbits tale"
Hahaha, Randy! :)

I like the suggestion "Between The Lines" as a title for Janis's autobiography. The implication of 'reading' between the lines IMO would be a good 'hook' to draw in the general public's initial interest. "Between The Lines" implies mystique...

Personally, I think the title of a book, movie, etc., is a key element in its commercial success.

At the moment (subject to change of course) my pick is "Between the Lines." Other titles on my list are:
"Portrait of the Artist"
"Through the Years"
"Time Flies"

I also thought "The Tangles of my Mind" had merit and if all else fails she can always call it, "Page Nine"!

"Between the Lines" sounds good... It would be a really neat book title and concept... sort of like going "behind the scenes" in movie making and the music business... Besides, it might encourage people to read "between the lines".

:D

I'm not sure, but I think the three most likely options are Society's Child, Between the lines and At Seventeen. I figure it depends on what US people think is the best synonyme for Janis

"I play like a girl" is a very good suggestion......but we have to think of the broader public - if only Rudies buy this book it won't do very well. Realistically, it's gonna be the publishers and Janis who decide this and they are going to rightly pick a title that will resonate with the widest audience.

Kathleen Brogan
04-12-2007, 05:50 PM
I really didn't except any of our titles would be considered. I don't think any of my suggestions would fly with the "regular people" as Janis sometimes calls them. If it was really up to us, she could just call it "Unreleased IV" ;)

Eva

In my opinion "I Play Like A Girl" as a title for Janis's autobiography could resonate with the general public. At least the female 55%? of the general public... the immediate connotation of this phrase is girls being excluded from boys' activities...What woman, gay or straight, hasn't been excluded at one time or another from 'the guys' doings? (And what a bummer that is! :( )

As for the sexual connotation of "I Play Like A Girl", probably 72% of the public would be intrigued by that book title... ;)

I like "Between The Lines" It kind of like the date on a grave stone. It's not important what the beginning date or the ending date it's the dash between the dates that is important. what is important is what happened between the the (Lines) dates.

Play Like A Girl definitely has merit.

Now if we were to adhere strictly to marketing strategies in choosing a title, I believe the most popular selling books are about self-help, cats, and dieting. So we could call it "How to Lose Weight and Improve Your Relationship with Your Cat."

WHAT??????? They donīt, well this may come as a surprise, but they do. I am married, so I know.

As for the name of the book I guess there are so many good names to call it. If I am allowed to speculate what would interest me the most if going to a book store just to spend the day it would be a name like: Hi, My Name Is Janis Ian.

And as for the cover, a face of a smiling white-haired woman.

I like "How to Lose Weight and Improve Your Relationship with Your Cat in 10 Easy Steps." as well, but I still think "Me" might be abit easier to fit on the front cover  We don't have a sequal title for the first of these but still for Volume II we can go with "More Me" and Volume III "Me Again" :D I can't think of anything better than that, and each chapter could be called by a different song :p Yeah???

I would say the three top contenders for general public appeal would be

Society's Child
Between The Lines
This Train Still Runs

Each represents a different phase of JI's life and career.

SC brought janis to the world market and to some extent it captures her mythology.

BTL: Janis arrived as a full force anf the title is so literary

TTSR: This titles sums it all up.

Can a book have 3 titles?
