I started a poll on outeverywhere.com, a lesbian and gay networking website I'm a member of, and my question was:
"here are my 10 favourite artists, which of these do you like most?
and the results so far are:
Annie Lennox 32 votes
Alison Moyet 29 votes
Marc Almond 22 votes
Sparks 14 votes
Jacques Brel / Janis Ian / Lene Lovich 10 votes each
Laurie Anderson 9 votes
Klaus Nomi 7 votes
Jane Birkin 5 votes
note: only British people voted, so you may not know some of the names lol

It is a hard one for me because I like some of those so much. Laurie Anderson has been a big inspiration for me for years and so has Brel. And of course, Janis Ian. Jane Birkin is also someone I like a lot. And Alison Moyet and Annie Lennox.
However Marc Almond would be top of my list there. A man who has always had the courage to stand by what he believes. A fantastic musician. And he has been knocked down both emotionally and physically so many times in his career and he has always found the inner streangth to get himself up and to start again. Plus he his from Southport which is always a bonus for me. :)
So it's Marc Almond followed by Laurie Anderson and Jacques Brel and Janis Ian.

I couldn't have said it better myself Dylan :)

It has to be Janis Ian first then Sparks who I remember from the 1970s and then Marc Almond. :)
Hmm... difficult... I think I'll go for:
Janis Ian
Jacques Brel
Laurie Anderson
In that order.

and Janis is only SECOND?????
well Janis Ian and Marc Almond are my 2 greatest musical loves, as both can make me cry just by opening their mouths and singing.
music is fundamental to my life, so anyone in my top 5 is deeply important to me. Janis had a deep impact on me when I first heard Stars all those years ago, and last year's living room concert has to figure among the musical highlights of my life.
the fact that I placed Marc above Janis is simply due to the fact that I have seen him approx 40 times in my life, and Janis only 6 alas... so if I count up the tears I have shed Marc has to win by default lol

Don't worry David, I was only teasing. I only wish I had taken more notice of Janis's magic all those years ago  having been "elsewhere" on the planet for much of my music lover's life to date :D

Good places to start:
Jane Birkin:

Jacques Brel:

Gisli, how about starting with a 'greatest hits' album? You'll probably even know some. From there you can go on. Jacques Brel sang in French and sometimes in Dutch (he was Belgian)

Dylan beat me to it lol
As for Morrissey, I haven't heard the album, tho I do like a lot of his stuff.
I just realised I completely forgot one of my all time favourite artists when making the list
Colin Vearncombe, also known as Black- he had a few hits in the late 80s before turning into a touring singer-songwriter-guitarist and turning his back on the pop music business. I saw him live on Tuesday night and he was superb as always. You can hear some of his music on his MySpace page:
http://www.myspace.com/blackakacolinvearncombe
You may know his 1988 hit Wonderful Life which is on there, but have a listen to the other songs, two of which are acoustic live recordings. This man has such a way with words and melody, and such a gorgeous voice....

This is one of the things I like so much about this forum. You get advice on so many artists you have'nt heard about and simply are not to be missed. Thanks all.
Eva greatest hits are not a good first for me, they tell me what songs got airplay and became famous, other then that they lack the "feeling". There are two exceptions from that, one is Echo by Pink Floyd and Working Without A Net by Janis Ian.
Again thanks for bringing those names up David, your music taste is quite similar to mine, I have noticed and new names you bring up get my earsl wanting to explore those names.
