One of the best songs on Folk Is The New Black, definitely.... and it sounds great live, too :)

This is a song I would love to hear Liza Minnelli do a cover of! I have a picture of her singing this in mind!

I can imagine a lot of people singing this song, from Reba MacEntire to Jane Olivor. It should become a standard.

This song is Janis Ians' finest and most beautiful stand alone song ever!

It's my favourite on FINB and sounds better still when live. Spine-chillingly beautiful at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London.

I had to put this record away for a while. There really is a limit on how many times I can play the Crocodile song for my kids in the car over and over and over again. My partner is much better at making them listen to the whole record through without replay of any song. I just love to hear them sing along with their favorites and it cracks me up to hear our five year old substitute what she thinks she hears. And now our eight year old can recognize that her little sister is singing the "wrong" words and she says to me, "Mama, isn't she cute." So I let them hear it again.

Still, there is a limit, so I switch them out now and then.

My favorite cut on FINB is "The Great Divide." It has all the elements of the quintessentially classic folk song, and even though it is especially relevant today, I think the lyrics are timeless.

My second favorite has turned out to be "Home is the Heart". "I believe the heart recalls, what lips forget and time makes small" I get goosebumps just listening!

Mine too Oak, although with so many great songs it's not easy to choose just one.

Home is the Heart was a slow burner for me, and it's also towards the end of the album.

But as you say Kathleen, there are lines in that song that gives you goosebumps

I can imagine it being stunning if performed live :)

Choices, choices...

The Great Divide is a superb piece of social protest.. timeless, prophetic and broad in its criticism.

Home is the Heart has both broad human context and for many, a deeply personal reference as well.

All Those Promises...well.. the story is somewhat universal, but the chills it sends down our spine are steeped in our indicidual pasts.

The point....there's not a "bad" song on the disc and once again, music in general, and Janis's music in particular is both universal and so very personal at the same time!

I like all the songs on FINB cd and my favorites change depending on my state of mind. Right now my favorite is "Joy" and "All Those Promises" is a close second. With other singer/songwriters I like there's usually a couple of songs on a cd that are my favorites and I could actually skip most of the others. Janis however grows on me-the more I hear her songs the more songs I add to my list of favorites. And there's very few songs that I don't connect with on an emotional level. I almost think at times that a live concert would be emotionally overwhelming. I'll probably have to go incognito as I'll lilkely cry through most of the songs.

Roady:

A live Janis performance is an experience not to be missed. I have been to quite a few over the years, and each one is special for a reason.

She gets better and better as time progresses. One thing you will find is that she puts 100% into every show, which I find not all performers do. You are keenly aware that this person on the stage truly loves what she does, knows she is good at it and wants to share all of that with you.

When you go to see her for the first time, don't go alone.. take someone special to share it with. That way you have witnesses!
