View Full Version : Lunar eclipse tonight

here in the UK we have had a spectacular total lunar eclipse tonight.

the sun passed behind the Earth, which blocked its light and the moon shrunk from a full moon to nothing in about an hour. fortunately we had a perfect clear night sky too.

the moon then changed colour to a pale orange, and as someone said as we were all out in the street, "it's strange to see the moon actually look like the speherical object that it is, rather than the flat silver plate it usually is."

I personally thought it looked like a shiny glitterball shining in the sky.

it was only when I came back online that I discovered the orange colour was due to pollutants in the Earth's atmosphere....

oh well, it was great :)

Saw the eclipse as we left the Joan Armatrading concert in Brighton tonight. Such a clear sky and millions of stars - everyone was looking up to the heavens. It is just beginning to clear - midnight exactly in the UK.

A bit earlier in the Netherlands. I missed it but I did see the moon slowly reappear again. Top first, which one doesn't see every day. Beautiful.

I missed it :( I was looking forward to (maybe) being able to see it, too, but I fell asleep mid-afternoon. I have had a terrible headache all day... Probably would have missed it anyway--dang Pacific Northwest is always too cloudy to see neat things like this.

I didn't even know it was coming up and watched it progress while I was on the road earlier this evening. Totality must have occurred while the sky was too bright for it to be visible, but as it got dark I was able to watch the progression. A somewhat surreal experience--as things have been a bit weird at home of late I found myself entertaining thoughts that perhaps something was wrong with the moon. Rather glad to learn that it wasn't just me.

It was beautiful. I took a couple of photos. I'll post them later if they turned out OK.

Very nice pictures Dylan. I was thinking at that moment that I wish I had a camera on me. Glad you had one.

So the moon disappeared bottom first? In that case I didn't see the moon reappear but disappear! Had I realised I would have waited to see the rest... How stupid can I be...? :(

Dang! It was cloudy today/tonight, and I've been waiting all week to see the eclipse...here in Cinci, the moon would have risen in full eclipse and emerged as it rose, something I'd never seen before. (Ponytail, you couldn't have seen it in the states west of the Mississippi anyway, as it would have risen and cleared the shadow by the time it got to you in WA. )

It's going to eclipse again in August, and I hope it's clear then!
That's the problem with living in Cinci, we have many cloudy days and nights, but when it is clear the sky is beautiful...too much light pollution, tho.

Hmmm, Bat... They were telling me on my local news that I would have been able to see at least part of it. The moon has been visible in the sky starting at around maybe 3:30 or 4pm here, gaining some height by 5pm (Pacific Time). Ah well, I still have fond memories of watching one some years ago with family and neighbors. Good times.
