In regard to my earlier post about the possibility of Janis doing an album of cover tunes.
If you could choose just 1 song for Janis to cover, what would it be?

I think my choice would be "Emily" by Laura Nyro. A great song that could really show off Janis's great voice. Also a song that sounds great played on the guitar.

What song would you like to hear Janis cover?

Well, I could easily fill that cd, but as I have to choose only one I suggest "I will never be the same" by Melissa Etheridge. It's on her 1993 album "Yes I am".

I was going to pick "River" too, I do love that song.

So I'll pick "The Last Time I saw Richard" which is my favourite Joni Mitchell song and one of my all time favourite songs.

I would love to hear Janis sing "Stormy Weather". I think her voice would sound great singing this.

"Am I Blue",
(Grant Clarke and Harry Akst) I just learned that!
Covered many times, I believe it was the song that made Ethel Waters famous. Said to be one of Bette Midler's favorite Blues songs.

I think it's perfect for Janis' voice.

I'd choose a Cohen selection also...Song of Bernadette

A slow, bluesy version of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love"

Joni Mitchell's "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire"

Dory Previn's "The Midget's Lament" or "Scared to be Alone" or "Stone for Bessie Smith" or "Twenty Mile Zone" or...

Janis doing cover songs is nice...but what about others doing Janis songs?

I can see David Bowie doing breaking Silence or This Train Still Runs, Elton John doing Matthew, Bob Dylan Searching For America, Katie Melua doing Stars and Britney Spears making sandwiches and bying Coca Cola for everybody.

To stay on topic Joni Mitchells, Both Sides Now.

I thought about it. There are indeed a lot of beautiful songs out there that would sound marvellous if Janis would redo them. I would certainly buy the album and enjoy for instance some beautiful jazzy songs.

In the end I might be a rigid fart but I like Janis's sound best in combination with Janis's songs. The songs she wrote herself, with or without a co-writer. Janis has a certain style which I truly love and that nobody else has.

It's just all Janis.

I tend to agree with Eva. If I had to choose between Janis doing an album of cover songs or an album like "Janis Ian's Greatest Hits" I'd choose the latter.

"Suzanne" has been my favorite song since the 70's. I just went thru all the clips of the song on ITunes and the only ones that didn't sound like chalk on the blackboard (to my ears) were by LC, Joan Baez, Judy Collins and Roberta Flack. But I'd still love to hear Janis sing it.

A Bob Dylan rendition of "At Seventeen" would be hilarious. Then again, I'm still waiting for him to be picked to sing the national anthem during the World Series.
