View Full Version : Arguments against gay marriage (warning: extreme sarcasm)

My daughter sent this to me some time ago:

1) Being gay is NOT natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural
things like eyeglasses, polyester, heart transplants, and air
conditioning.

2) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that
hanging around tall people will make you tall.

3) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never
adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the
service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

4) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at
all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and
divorce is still illegal.

5) Straight marriage would be less meaningful if gay marriage were
allowed; the sanctity of Brittany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage
would be destroyed.

6) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay
couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to
marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more
children.

7) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight
parents only raise straight children.

8) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours,
the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's
why we have only one religion in America.

9) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at
home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to
raise children.

10) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy
behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has
legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

(one of the saddest parts about our society is that, these arguments,
before the humourous common sense, are the real reasons why people
can't accept gay marriages.)

Wow, that list has really changed from its first incarnation:

My father actually harped on a variation of #10, along with the "creating a right" nonsense. I do hope they piled enough dirt on him to keep him out of any further debate.

Gay marriage has been legal in Canada now since 2005, and I see no change in the fabric of time and space. There has been no noticeable change in heterosexual marriages to my knowledge, and no one has applied to marry their goat.

The same opponents continue to be blinded by the glaring light of stupidity, so no change there. I can only ask, what’s the big whoop?

That's exactly how I feel about my mother!

No one has mentioned one huge benefit of gay marraige: think what it'll do for the wedding planner industry!

Excuse me...I have to get back to trying to squeeze my cat and rabbit into their flower girl outfits!:p

Dee--the thing is, people have been marrying their farm animals for a good long time. They just don't share a household as a rule--a bit messy, you know.

As Tom Lehrer said of a friend: "he majored in animal husbandry until they caught him at it one night."

Gay marriage is normal for Gay people. Period. (Well, for those who want it.) I'm not inclined to or seeking to marry beyond the level of commitment of the heart. Legislators have no control there, nor do religious zealots. They can all kiss my grits! :p

Anyone who seeks to marry for any reason other than love will regret it later. Perhaps this is why the "moralists" are so unhappy. That or the fact that their firstborns almost always seem to be premature.

I love it Dee! I just wish America would follow suit. In this marriage conflict America is losing the battle "of same sex relationships equality and marriage". So, So sad America the land of the Free!

Land of the Free? Don’t think so. That has become a dubious claim at best.

Hopefully one day it will become so, before it's too late.
